Berlin Visual Arts Residency 2020 will support a New Zealand artist to live and work in Berlin at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien for up to twelve months from October 2020.
This biennial residency in Berlin was established in 1999 to enable a New Zealand visual artist to work on an approved project and undertake professional development opportunities.
Other expected benefits include:
- developing the potential of the artist through exposure to new cultures and new ideas.
- acting as an ambassador in bringing an increased awareness in Berlin of New Zealand visual arts.
Funding Information
The residency provides:
- a stipend of NZD $40,000 for the twelve month residency to be used for living and material costs, travel to Berlin and insurance;
- a one-bedroom 60sqm apartment in the district of Friedrichshain in former East Berlin;
- the Künstlerhaus Bethanien studio and administration fee, which includes a contribution towards the costs of an exhibition, its promotion and a publication.
What the Künstlerhaus Bethanien provides?
The International Studio Programme at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien is one of the largest and most prestigious international residency programme. The programme provides:
- a studio;
- advice on applicants projects;
- curatorial support;
- workshops and technical infrastructure;
- an exhibition;
- participation in an Open Studio event;
- publishing support;
- contacts with international curators, critics, publicists, theorists, gallery owners and collectors;
- liaison with international institutions, projects and exhibitions;
- seminars, talks and readings.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the Berlin Visual Arts Residency 2020 applicants:
- must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
- must have a strong national reputation as a visual artist. Applicant will have either:
- received critical acclaim for work applicant have produced or
- completed a body of work that has been acknowledged for its artistic excellence.
Project Timing
The residency is offered for 12 months from October 2020 – October 2021.

To be eligible for Creative New Zealand funding:
- Applicants project or activities must directly benefit New Zealand arts, artists or practitioners.
- Applicant must have a track record of experience and success — this means you must have:
- recognition from peers or experts;
- achieved a degree of critical or sales success;
- specialised training or practical experience.
