Is your organisation an African feminist/ women’s rights organisation with cutting edge ideas for advancing women’s rights and creating systemic change? Is your organisation led and majority staffed by women, and registered on the African continent? If yes, then you can apply for the AWDF call for applications in any of the three thematic areas listed:
Economic Security & Justice:
- Defending women’s economic rights and justice including mobilising women in rural contexts, urban economies, and/or in non-traditional work.
- Building ideas and models around women’s economic futures.
- Defending women’s land, property and inheritance rights.
- Securing women’s housing rights, particularly in the context of urbanisation.
- Advancing climate and environmental justice.
Body & Health Right:
- Ending violence against women in all forms through prevention and/or response.
- Advancing the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls, including on issues of sexual orientation, reproductive choice.
- Promoting women’s emotional well-being and mental health.
- Prevention and management of issues around women and HIV/AIDS.
- Building awareness and feminist responses to the rise of non-communicable diseases (including cancers, diseases of lifestyle and nutrition).
Leadership, Participation & Peace:
- Promoting women’s leadership, meaningful participation in decision making including building feminist leadership for social, political and economic change.
- Advancing diverse women’s participation in governance and decision-making at all levels.
- Defending democratic operating space for women’s rights organisations and defenders.
- Promoting women’s human security and peace in all contexts.
AWDF encourages applications for work that is led by and supports the leadership and concerns of women facing multiple discriminations (women with diverse abilities; women living with HIV/AIDS, young women, LBTQ communities, women sex workers, women in the rural areas and marginalised women in urban areas.
Areas
Organisations working within the below areas are particularly encouraged to apply although AWDF will be accepting applications from organisations working on all themes in strategy. Please note that organisations may request grants of a maximum of 50% of their total income in the last financial year.
- Transnational/ subregional and regional organising:
- Maximum Amount/USD: $100,000
- Geographical Scope: Initiatives on any theme being implemented in two or more African countries, including initiatives engaging sub-regional or regional mechanisms.
- Grant period: One year
- Rights of women living with disability:
- Maximum Amount/USD: $50,000
- Geographical Scope: Any African country
- Grant period: One year
- Communicable Diseases (NCDs):
- Maximum Amount/USD: $50,000
- Geographical Scope: Any African country
- Grant period: One year
- Movement building in Francophone West Africa; Building leadership of young women in Francophone West Africa:
- Maximum Amount/USD: $50,000
- Geographical Scope: Any African country Francophone West Africa
- Grant period: One year
Eligibility Criteria
AWDF was founded to support the leadership and agency of African women in transforming society towards equality and justice. In that light, under its main grants programme, AWDF supports African women’s organisations that meet the following criteria:
- Women-led, with a majority women staff and board.
- A stated commitment to supporting women and/or advancing women’s rights/ gender equality in their mission/vision.
- Organisations registered in any African country, and working at the local, national, subregional or regional African levels. (Note that AWDF is not able to transfer funds to organisations based in Sudan, South Sudan or Somalia. However AWDF is able to support organisations based in other African countries that are implementing initiatives in these countries).
