The U.S. Embassy Brussels Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Department of State has announced that funding is available through its Public Diplomacy Grants Program.
PAS Brussels invites proposals for projects that strengthen ties between the United States and Belgium by using an extensive alumni network. They offer alumni of State Department exchange programs and local programs in Belgium the opportunity to propose innovative projects that address one of five U.S. foreign policy themes or projects that build up alumni engagement. Applicants may collaborate with alumni from other countries for activities that advance regional priorities, but Belgium must figure prominently in the program or activity. These projects enhance the leadership capacity, convening power, and community engagement of alumni and alumni networks.
Priority Program Areas
- Programs that demonstrate active partnership between the United States and Belgium to address new and evolving security challenges via a shared history.
- Programs that support a long-term investment in U.S.-Belgian ties through educational, cultural, professional, and other exchanges between two countries.
- Programs that facilitate economic ties between the United States and Belgium, including through entrepreneurship.
- Programs that have a national reach and impact by linking like minded organizations across linguistic and regional divides.
Award Information
- Award amounts: Up to $25,000
- Length of performance period: Three to 12 months
- Anticipated project start date: October 1, 2019
Examples of Projects
Examples of projects include, but are not limited to:
- Alumni network building (e.g. roundtables, online and social media platforms)
- Awareness campaigns promoting U.S. government exchange and other programs
- Community service projects building civic participation, empowering women and girls, minority groups, and other inclusive activities
- Support for creating an alumni association and/or reunion activities to maintain ties between alumni
- Training or seminar activities for or by alumni
- Peer-to-peer and other mentorship programs that enhance the skills and networks of alumni
- Creation of an alumni advisory group to keep U.S. officials informed about the latest developments in Belgium

Eligible Applicants
- The Public Affairs Section encourages applications from the United States and Belgium:
- Registered not-for-profit organizations, including think tanks and civil society/non-governmental organizations with programming experience;
- Individuals;
- Non-profit or governmental educational institutions; or
- Governmental institutions
- For-profit or commercial entities are not eligible to apply.
