The San Diego Foundation has launched the Healthy Children & Families (HCF) Grant Program to support mental, behavioral and related support services to children of all ages and their families, utilizing culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices.
Thriving children and families are an important component of a healthy, resilient region.
HCF advances community resilience through health equity and increases the quality of life for children and families through expanded access to supportive services, including:
- Connection to direct financial assistance
- Equitable access to affordable and high-quality healthcare, including mental and behavioral health services
- Addressing trauma and increasing access to equity-centered, trauma-informed services for children and families
Strategies
- The following are strategies that support the goal of the HCF grant. Organizations will be asked to identify the primary strategy they plan to employ in their application. All applicants are encouraged to address services and support for low-to-moderate-income families, as well as historically marginalized communities, and those experiencing health inequities or negative social determinants of health.

Proposals for consideration must focus on at least one of the below areas:

Mental/behavioral health screening, treatment and referrals
- Implement culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches that address Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and/or other clinical screening tools for children of all ages and/or their parents, guardians or caregivers and provide appropriate treatment or referrals based on screening outcomes.

Access to mental and behavioral healthcare and/or care coordination
- Ensure that children and families have access and/or care coordination to high-quality, affordable and culturally responsive mental and behavioral health care.

Supportive interventions
- Provide culturally responsive and trauma-informed interventions for children of all ages and/or their parents, guardians or caregivers to support mental and behavioral wellness. Proposals can include, but are not limited to, family-centered interventions, peer-to-peer support, interactive education, coaching and mentoring, and other programs promoting resiliency.

Funding Information
The 2022 HCF grant is expected to award a total of $300,000. Eligible organizations may request a maximum of $30,000 per proposal. This grant is to advance and sustain initiatives within 501(c) (3) nonprofit organizations.
Eligibility Criteria
- Each proposal must be led by a nonprofit with 501(c) (3) public charity status, located in and serving San Diego County. A 501(c) (3) public charity may serve as a fiscal sponsor for another applicant to administer the grant and provide regular financial reporting to The San Diego Foundation.
- Organizations may be part of more than one proposal, but may only serve as lead applicant for one proposal.
- Projects must be completed within a 12-month timeline.
- The San Diego Foundation will not fund endowments, existing obligations/debt, scholarships, or projects that promote religious or political doctrines.
- Projects must work to expand care for low-to-moderate-income communities and/or populations experiencing health disparities or negative social determinants of health.
