The Arts Grants is offering Short-Term Project Funding to the New Zealand Artists, arts practitioners and arts organisations.

This funding enables more sustainable careers, encourages innovation and the development of arts practice, and provides opportunities for diverse communities to access the arts.

Strategies

Aligning with their Māori Arts and Pacific Arts strategies:

• Te Hā o ngā Toi – Māori Arts Strategy 2019 – 2024
  • A five-year strategy with four focus areas:
    • Advance ngā toi Māori practice development: More opportunities for Māori artists to develop their arts practice, skills and progress their careers in Aotearoa and internationally.
    • Increase public engagement with ngā toi Māori: More opportunities for New Zealanders to access and experience ngā toi Māori in communities and regions across Aotearoa.
    • Build a stronger sector to advance ngā toi Māori aspirations: The arts sector champions ngā toi Māori and mātauranga Māori.
    • Working collaboratively with others to strengthen ngā toi Māori: Partnering with Crown and cultural agencies to strengthen Māori artists and arts.
• The Pacific Arts Strategy 2018 – 2023
  • A five-year strategy with four focus areas:
    • Tagata: Pasifika artists and arts practitioners are resourced to develop their practice and deliver outstanding work.
    • Moana: Meaningful connections are made, across Aotearoa, Oceania and globally, to ensure that Pacific arts are further enriched.
    • Vaka: Pacific arts groups, collectives and organisations are supported to help lead and grow Pacific arts in Aotearoa.
    • Va: An innovative and networked Pacific arts environment exists so that Pacific arts are strengthened for future success.

Funding Information

• Funding limits
  • The maximum amount applicant can apply for is $75,000 but lower limits apply to some activities:
    • competitions (not prizes): $30,000
    • documentary and archival projects: $30,000
    • international professional development: 80% of the overall cost to a maximum of $12,000
    • international presentation of artwork: a contribution to international travel and freight costs and up to
    • $10,000 for proven costs associated with presenting work
    • mentoring: $5,000
    • music recording: $15,000 for emerging artists; $25,000 for established artists
    • websites: $5,000 for developing a new site; $5,000 for placing work on an established site; $30,000 for editorial costs for existing websites
• Publishing subsidies
  • They provide publishing subsidies towards the costs of editing, designing, printing and distributing a publication:
    • up to 100 pages: $2,500
    • 100–200 pages: $3,000
    • 201–300 pages: $3,500
    • 301–400 pages: $4,000
    • large heavily illustrated books: $10,000
    • children’s picture books up to 16 pages: $2,500
    • children’s picture books over 16 pages: $3,500

What they fund

Arts Grant funding enables artists, arts practitioners and arts organisations to:

• research and create work
• present and distribute their work nationally and internationally
• develop skills including mentoring, internships, residencies, workshops and conferences
• undertake community or collaborative projects
• undertake projects with international connections
• publish catalogues, monographs, journals, books and critical writing.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible Applicants

• Individuals who are New Zealand (NZ) citizens or permanent residents.
• NZ-based organisations
• Arts organisations or NZ artists based overseas. But, the application must:
  • show direct benefit to NZ arts
  • be accompanied by a letter of endorsement from a well-established artist or arts organisation based in NZ.
• To apply to Māori arts:
  • the applicant must be Māori or their proposed project must be managed or directed by Māori
  • organisations must be owned and managed by Māori. If an organisation is applying for funding on behalf of an individual, that person must also be Māori.

Eligible Projects

• More sustainable careers for individual artists and arts practitioners
  • For instance, projects that allow individual artists and arts practitioners to:
    • develop professional skills that support their careers
    • grow national and international audiences for their work
    • develop diverse sources of support
    • develop skills and knowledge to ensure their artwork and practice is relevant to New Zealanders and international audiences.
• Development of arts practice
  • For instance, projects which encourage the development of:
    • individual artists and arts practitioners through improving their artistic quality, their ability to be innovative and share best practice with international peers, so that they can reach their potential and achieve their goals
    • arts organisations through improving their artistic quality, organisational effectiveness, and financial health
    • New Zealand’s arts infrastructure, arts communities and audiences.
• Innovation in New Zealand arts
  • For instance, projects that allow artists, arts practitioners and arts organisations to actively investigate new ways of working and take artistic risks. Innovation may exist in the:
    • form of the work
    • process of creating the work
    • way the work is presented
    • ways the work engages with its audience
    • way in which skills and techniques are passed on.
• Opportunities for diverse communities to access and participate in high-quality arts experiences
  • For instance, projects that:
    • remove barriers to access for audiences across New Zealand and internationally
    • celebrate the arts of diverse cultures within New Zealand
