The Study of the U.S. Branch (ECA/A/E/USS), Office of Academic Exchange Programs, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), is inviting proposals submissions from accredited U.S. post-secondary education institutions and other U.S. public and private non-profit organizations for the design and implementation of the Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) for Scholars to take place over the course of six weeks beginning no sooner than June 1, 2023, pending the availability of FY 2022 funds.
The Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars are graduate-level seminars held at U.S. academic institutions for groups of 18 foreign faculty, scholars, and practitioners. Each of the six Institutes focuses on a theme or topic in U.S. studies and will be six weeks in duration, including an approximately four-week academic residency at an academic institution and up to two weeks of an integrated educational study tour.
Purpose: Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) for Scholars are intensive academic programs whose purpose is to provide foreign university faculty and other professionals the opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions, broadly defined. The ultimate goal is to strengthen curricula and to improve the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions abroad.

- The Study of the U.S. Institute on American Politics and Political Thought should provide a multinational group of 18 experienced foreign university faculty and practitioners insight into how intellectual and political movements have influenced modern American political institutions and American democracy
- The Study of the U.S. Institute on Contemporary American Literature should provide a multinational group of up to 18 experienced foreign university faculty and practitioners with a deeper understanding of U.S. society and culture, past and present, through an examination of contemporary American (U.S.) literature.
- The Study of the U.S. Institute on Journalism and Media should provide a multinational group of 18 experienced and highly motivated foreign journalism instructors and other related specialists with a deeper understanding of the roles that journalism and the media play in U.S. society.
- The Study of the U.S. Institute on U.S. Culture, Identity, and Society should provide a multinational group of 18 experienced and highly motivated foreign university faculty and other specialists with a deeper understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, identities, and institutions through the lens of diversity and national unity.
- The Study of the Institute on U.S. Economics and Sustainable Development should provide a multinational group of 18 experienced foreign university faculty, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers with a deeper understanding of the U.S. economic system and emerging trends in business.
- The Study of the U.S. Institute on U.S. Foreign Policy should provide a multinational group of 18 experienced foreign university faculty and practitioners with a deeper understanding of new approaches to U.S. foreign policy and how U.S. foreign policy is formulated and implemented.
Funding Information
- Fiscal Year Funds: FY 2022 base year, up to $2,500,000, pending the availability of funds; FY 2023 Non-Competitive Continuation year one, up to $2,500,000, pending successful performance and the availability of funds; FY 2024 Non-Competitive Continuation year two, up to $2,500,000, pending successful performance and the availability of funds.
- Approximate Total Funding: $7,500,000. These figures represent base year plus two non competitive continuation years, pending successful performance and the availability of funds.
- Approximate Average Award: $2,500,000, pending successful performance and the availability of funds.
- Ceiling of Award Range: $2,500,000 for FY 2022 base year (or $7,500,000 for the base year plus two non-competitive continuation years), pending the availability of funds.
- Anticipated Award Date: June 1, 2022, pending the availability of FY 2022 funds.
- Anticipated Project Completion Date: May 31, 2026. This date reflects the anticipated duration of the award – one base year plus two Non-Competitive Continuation years.
Eligibility Criteria
- U.S. public and private academic and cultural institutions, exchange of-persons, and other not-for-profit organizations meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c)(3) may submit applications for this competition.
- Applicants must have nonprofit status with the IRS at the time of application.
