CREASION is accepting applications for CSOs Grant to strengthen the alliance of waste workers for policy process.
Green Shift: Circularity of Plastic Waste for Net-Zero Carbon Nepal (GreenShift Nepal) project is funded by the European Union to promote a just transition to circular economy. GreenShift Nepal is a four-year project which will be implemented in nine municipalities – three in each of Bagmati, Madhesh, and Lumbini provinces. The project implementation is led by CREASION through the consortium partners Restless Development, and Youth Innovation Lab (YI-LAB).
GreenShift Nepal will work with waste enterprises, SMEs, CSOs of waste workers, youths, school children, and three tiers of government in the promotion of circular economy of plastics. The project intends to: build the capacity of waste enterprises to improve their plastic waste collection efficiency; support SMEs for the promotion of plastic alternative products and packaging; work with school children in generating knowledge and awareness; engage youths in leading advocacy and awareness campaigns; and enhance the capacity of three tiers of government for inclusive and evidence-based policies through active involvement of youths and CSOs of waste workers with the goal of moving towards the circularity of plastics.
Objective
- The overall objective of this activity is to strengthen the capacity of CSOs of waste workers to advocate for their human rights, labor rights, social security rights, and financial freedom and create an enabling environment for them to actively participate in the policy processes. This activity intends to foster collaboration and networking opportunities by creating a robust support system that amplifies the impact of these CSOs, ultimately contributing to the upliftment of waste workers and the sustainable management of waste in the targeted regions.
Who are CSOs of Waste Workers (WWs)?
- Waste Workers are individuals operating informally (unorganized and unacknowledged by legal authorities) in the recovery of recyclable material and waste management activities. A CSO of WW is a formal association of waste workers that works to uplift their livelihood via social security and financial freedom.
Funding Information
- The two selected Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) who are currently working in Lumbini and Bagmati provinces are eligible for a seed grant of NRS 309,000.
Activities Supported through this grant
- The main objective of the CSO grant is the addition of new members from the private sector and marginalized communities strengthened to network and advocate for the right of WWs. Each organization should submit to a minimum of three and a maximum of five activities. The following activities (but not limited to) will be supported through the CSO grant:
- Outreach events to expand the members’ network
- Occupational, Health, and Safety Trainings
- Policy Dialogues/Roundtable discussions with local bodies, private sector, and other relevant stakeholders
- Community Awareness Programs/Campaigns
Additional Support
- Along with the CSO grant, the selected CSOs will also receive capacity building trainings and knowledge sharing platforms. This work will include several capacity building activities targeted to the CSOs working in the waste management including trainings and knowledge sharing platform. The additional support includes, but not limited to:
- Network Strengthening and Advocacy:
- Empower selected CSOs to build networks and advocate for the rights of waste workers.
- Empower selected CSOs by ensuring activities that explicitly represents intersectionality, giving due consideration to gender and social inclusion.
- Explore collaboration with different national and international agencies to build the capacity of CSO
- International Platforms and Experience Sharing:
- Facilitate participation in experience-sharing and learning forums on Circular Economy at international platforms ensuring inclusive participation.
- Experience Sharing Conference:
- Organize an experience-sharing conference to discuss challenges, successes, and future directions for the selected CSOs.
- Network Strengthening and Advocacy:
Eligibility Criteria
- CSOs formed by waste workers based in Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Bharatpur Metropolitan city, Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality of Bagmati Province; Nepalgunj sub-metropolitan City, Tilottama Municipality, and Kohalpur municipality of Lumbini Province; and Janakpur sub-metropolitan city, Bardibas municipality, and Khadak Municipality of Lumbini Province are eligible to apply.
- The CSOs will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Work Experience:
- Demonstrate experience in the waste sector, showcase previous projects, initiatives, or campaigns.
- Minimum number of years actively engaged in waste management or for rights of the waste workers.
- Member Reach:
- Details on the current membership size and their geographic reach.
- Female Representation:
- Percentage of female members and marginalized members within the organization.
- Any specific efforts or programs aimed at empowering and involving gender equality and social inclusion
- Documentation:
- Submission of valid registration documents proving the legal status of the CSO.
- Evidence of tax-paying status to ensure legal and financial compliance.
- Vision and Plan for Waste Sector:
- Clearly articulated organization’s vision for its role in the waste sector.
- Detailed plan outlining how the CSO intends to contribute to waste management and sustainable practices.
- Network Building:
- Any ongoing efforts or experiences in building networks or training activities within the waste management community.
- Partnerships or collaborations that have strengthened the organization’s impact.
- Financial Sustainability:
- Financial sustainability plan, demonstrating how the CSO plans to manage funds efficiently.
- Detail any diversified funding sources or income-generating initiatives.
