Applications are now open for the VII season of the project “Cross-Border Journalism” of the program “Perspectives” – summer 2019.
For the fifth year, Cross-Border Journalism has helped novice Russian-speaking journalists from the Baltic States, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Russia, Ukraine to implement international journalistic projects, gain experience in new countries, learn regional specifics, establish new professional international contacts with colleagues and editors from other countries.
The VII season of the project “Cross-Border Journalism” will be held in the cities of the North and South Caucasus. Journalists and freelancers, collaborating in teams, will be able to create joint or individual cross-border projects with the support of experienced mentors, international media editors, and alumni of the Perspectives program. The organizers will provide reimbursement of the agreed expenses necessary for attending meetings and master classes of the program, short-term study tours and associated costs for the creation of cross-border projects of the participants.
Project Criteria
- Projects can be devoted to any topic , for example, the effects of climate change, the export and import of food, the impact of small businesses on civil society, environmental problems, garbage collection and processing, alternative energy, utilities, how tariffs are formed and what can be said about the management system in different regions and any other.
- Projects must contain a cross-border aspect, that is, the idea of history linking or comparing 2 or more regions of the program participating countries: the Baltic States, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Russia, Ukraine. The proposed topics of this season should not necessarily concern the Caucasus region, but this will be an advantage in the selection.
- The organizers are open to any projects that may contain a cross-border element and be of interest to an audience outside of one region.
Program Activities
The main activities of the project:
- July 11-14, 2019:
- Workshops on creating longrids, interviewing skills in international media standards, using the latest media formats (polls, gamification, cards, animation, infographics, etc.), and the basics of visualizing stories and human stories
- Team meetings with mentors, project ideas presentations and project development planning, budgeting and coordination.
- July 15 – September 5, 2019:
- Participants return to their workplaces and remotely, in teams, work to create materials under the guidance of experienced mentors and journalists.
- During this period, each team at a convenient time will be able to make a short-term research trip to the project regions of Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus necessary for collecting actual data and practicing skills to create cross-border material. The agreed costs associated with the implementation of these practical exercises in the format of research trips will be compensated by the program.
- September 6-8, 2019:
- Workshops on the promotion of materials in social networks. Graduate tips on submitting projects for international awards, and presenting materials to editors of international media.
- The final session, in which teams will be able to meet for the final discussion of their materials with mentors and other project participants.
- September 20, 2019. Approximate release date.
- The journalistic material created during teamwork is the end result of the practical exercises of the project participants. The decision on the subsequent use of the material, including the format of its publication and distribution in the media, is made independently by the journalists and editors of the media themselves.
- The program “Perspectives” does not claim copyright and does not participate in editorial decisions regarding publications of project participants.
Location
The events of the VII season of the project “Cross-Border Journalism” will be held in the cities of the North and South Caucasus. The exact location will be determined after the completion of the selection of applications in accordance with the needs of participants for the implementation of their cross-border projects.
Eligibility Criteria
- The project is available to full-time and freelance journalists creating materials in Russian for Russian-language media in Russia, Ukraine, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Baltic States and the Caucasus
- The idea of a journalistic project proposed in the application should relate to topics of importance for several countries participating in the project.
- Priority will be given to team applications, where participants represent several countries and media
- Applications are accepted for consideration from journalists who are at the beginning or at the middle stage of their professional career, having 3-20 years of experience in the specialty.
- The working language of the program is Russian.
