The Minority Rights Group (MRG) International is seeking to support civil society organizations as part of its project: ‘Empowering Egyptian Civil Society to Promote the Rights of Discriminated Religious and Ethnic Minorities’ funded by the European Commission.
The project focuses on encouraging cooperation between minority communities and non-minority civil society organizations to address discrimination against minorities, thereby contributing to minority inclusion, intercommunity and interfaith understanding. This action also aims to promote cultural citizenship through the participation of minority cultures in the public sphere as well as increased advocacy for the rights of ethnic and religious minority groups.
As part of this project, this call seeks to fund projects that will contribute to amplifying minority voices and enhancing the collaboration between minority and non-minority organizations and communities to advocate for religious and ethnic minority rights.
Funding Information
- The amount available for each project is between 1,000 – 5,000 Euros and projects may last up to a maximum of six months.
Project Characteristics
- MRG will support projects ideas that will empower minority members to present their distinct cultures, issues, histories, language, counter discriminatory perceptions as well as combat negative stereotypes about them. The project should build acceptance of the cultures of minorities and allow their public integration.

Eligibility Criteria
- Cultural organizations and initiatives (including those working on musical production, dance, visual arts, cinema and theatre, handicrafts, etc.), think tanks, research centres, human rights organizations, and groups working with or representing ethnic and religious minorities in Egypt and have a track- record of similar work.
Criteria for Applicants
- Applicants must be a non-governmental or community-based organization or initiative working on related issues.
- Have an established track record of similar work in one or more of the project countries.
- Have the ability to receive funding, either through their own organization or an agreed upon alternative arrangement which aligns with approved protocol.
- Be committed to involving all ethnic and/or religious communities in your broader activities.
Selection Criteria
- A well-argued project that shows clearly how its objectives will be achieved.
- Clearly justifying budget that represents value for money.
- Clearly identifying target beneficiaries and planning to reach those beneficiaries effectively.
- Projects that address gender issues, pay attention to multiple forms of discrimination, and include vulnerable groups in project implementation and/or organizational structure.
- Improving coordination between community-based organizations working on behalf of ethnic and linguistic minorities and other (non-minority based) civil society organizations.
