The Government of Canada is accepting applications for the First Nations Environmental Contaminants Program (FNECP) that explores the link between human health and environmental contaminants.
Indigenous Services Canada provides funding through the FNECP to help First Nations communities improve their health. The program supports these communities in identifying, investigating and characterizing the impact of exposure to environmental hazards.
The program is intended to:
- Help First Nation communities address their environmental health concerns and support capacity development
- Encourage community-based study of environmental health issues by integrating Indigenous ways of knowing, traditional knowledge and science
- Recognize that wellness is influenced by environmental, social, cultural and economic factors, and that Nations, family, community and land all play a part in their health
Priority
- Your proposal should address these priority areas currently supported by the Program:
- Examines the link or association of contaminant(s) of concern in the environment and health.
- Environmental trends related to human exposure to contaminants in traditional territories.
- Development of a Communication Plan and Resources for the project and the findings.
Activities
- Its activities include community-based:
- Research
- Monitoring
- Risk assessment
- Risk communication
- Knowledge integration.
Special requirement for funding
- The FNECP program requires that:
- Primary research projects, or the BAPHE projects, be carried out in partnership with academically trained scientists (a PhD or MSc-level) with a track record of peer-reviewed publications in the field of the proposed project
- Knowledge integration projects be carried out in partnership with a project lead with at least a Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, health sciences or education
- Risk communication projects be carried out in partnership with academically trained experts (at least a BS or MSc-level) with proven experience in conducting risk communication in the field of the proposed project
Eligible Projects
- The project must focus on human health effects and/or exposure. The current focus of the Program is to address high priority health concerns in communities where there is a possibility of exposure to environmental contaminants at levels of concern. For full eligibility, ECP projects must include ALL of the following:
- Human health exposure.
- Potential Contaminant(s) of Concern.

- Alberta
- Manitoba
- Saskatchewan
- Ontario
- Quebec
- Atlantic Canada
- bands
- districts
- councils
- tribal councils and associations
- governments of self-governing First Nations communities and regions
- First Nations non-government and voluntary associations and organizations
- These include non-profit corporations that work on behalf of, or in partnership with, a First Nations community
