Council of Europe: Grant for Southern Mediterranean Civil Society to Reinforce Support & Protection Mechanisms for Victims/Survivors of Gender-Based Violence

The North-South Centre of the Council of Europe is launching a call for the attribution of grants aiming at strengthening capacities of eight civil society organisations in the Southern Mediterranean to ensure a greater access to protection structures and services for victims/survivors of violence against women and girls.

In the framework of the joint programme between the European Union and the Council of Europe, “Regional Support to Reinforce Human rights, Rule of Law and Democracy in the Southern Mediterranean” (South Programme IV), the North-South Centre is coordinating a regional grant scheme which will support the implementation of national or local activities in Southern Mediterranean countries.

It aims at promoting the multi-sectoral cooperation and/or coordination for the protection of victims/survivors of gender-based-violence in compliance with both human rights-based and victim-centred approaches.

Target stakeholders

Eight CSOs or consortium of CSOs, specialised in the protection of victims/survivors of gender-based violence (one grantee for each target beneficiary country : Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia) must conduct activities on the protection of women victims/survivors at the national or local level.

These activities should target professionals or representatives of at least one of the following services below and involve as much as possible other CSOs providing support services or shelters and representatives of the local and/or national governance:

Activities

In this respect, the following activities will be developed

  1. Support to civil society organizations (CSOs) to conduct activities on the protection of women and girls victims/survivors of gender-based violence at the national or local level, through a regional grant scheme;
  2. Training activities for beneficiaries of the grant scheme on Council of Europe tools and methodologies;
  3. Coordination and preparatory meetings between beneficiaries of the grant scheme and relevant national and/or local authorities;
  4. Regional Women Empowerment Conference targeted at raising awareness among relevant stakeholders from the Southern Mediterranean region on the protection of girls against violence (tackling regional issues such as minimum age of marriage, trafficking of girls, harmful practices, migrant and refugee girls, etc.);
  5. Regional closing seminar to assess the results of the regional grant scheme together with governmental authorities, South Programme IV steering committee members and other relevant stakeholders and experts from the Euro-Mediterranean region to paving the way for the appropriate follow-up action.
