Deadline: 10 October 2017
The Overseas Territories Environment and Climate Fund (also known as Darwin Plus) is seeking applications to provide funding for:
- environmental projects in UK Overseas Territories
- fellowships for UK Overseas Territories (OT) Nationals to train in the UK
Priority Areas
- A key priority for Darwin Plus is that it should help deliver the UK Governments commitment to create a Blue Belt of marine protection around the OTs. This includes:
- Improving marine conservation, protection or management, including developing integrated marine management plans
- Promoting sustainable fisheries including the development of sustainable management plans and development of the fisheries sector, including aquaculture
- Further priorities include:
- Dealing with invasive alien species including prevention through improved biosecurity and/or eradication/control where species have already become established
- Developing approaches to deal with the effects of climate change, including renewable energy schemes
- Developing tools to value ecosystem services and monitor biodiversity to inform sustainable development policies and practices
- Developing ecosystem-based initiatives for the conservation and sustainable use of the terrestrial and marine environments
- Developing or improving waste management strategies
- Developing data systems on biodiversity (and human activities affecting biodiversity) to help develop policies and management plans. This should include baseline survey and subsequent monitoring
Size of Grants
- Darwin Plus Main Projects:
- The available funding in any given year is, however, limited and projects with a value exceeding £300,000 are less likely to be funded as the projects are keen to fund a range of projects across the Territories.
- Darwin Plus Fellowships:
- Eligible costs (depending on the nature of the Fellowship) include a monthly subsistence, host organisation expenses, travel costs and fees for academic qualifications, but should not exceed £30,000 in total.
Eligibility Criteria
- Darwin Plus Main Projects:
- Applications must come from an organisation, not an individual. The project welcomes applications from all organisations working in the UKOTs. This may include NGOs, research institutions, the private sector and other stakeholders and UKOT Governments. A collaborative approach is encouraged and all project partners must be clearly listed on the application.
- The lead applicant will be responsible for overall management of the project, including financial management and reporting. The applicant may work with one or more other implementing organisations to assist with all or part of the work.
- Organisations applying for funding must:
- have a credible record of working on similar types of projects
- have demonstrated experience managing projects of a similar size
- nominate a Project Leader who will be responsible for the technical direction of the project.
- The Project Leader should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Darwin Plus Fellowships:
- The applicant organisation will usually be UK-based and the proposed Fellow must be an OT national who has worked or is working on environmental issues in the UK OTs.
- The 14 UK Overseas Territories are: Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Indian Ocean Territory, The British Virgin Islands, The Cayman Islands, The Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, The Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie & Oeno Islands, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (including Gough Island Dependency), South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Sovereign Base Areas, Akrotiri and Dhekelia (on Cyprus), The Turks & Caicos Islands.
