The U.S. Embassy Tashkent Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce funding is available through the Embassy’s Democracy Commission (DemCom) Small Grants Program. This program supports the development of Uzbekistan’s democratic institutions and civil society by competitively awarding small grants to Uzbekistan’s non-profit, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and associations, to nonprofit civil society organizations (CSOs), and to independent local media organizations.

Goal

Increase the capacity of civil society organizations in Uzbekistan to respond to the country’s urgent social needs, and increase citizen participation in governance through effective implementation of reforms and laws on civil society, government transparency and citizen oversight.

Head Categories

  • Strengthening the Role of Women and Marginalized Communities through Civic Education and Entrepreneurship
    • Goal: Increase the capacity of women and marginalized communities in Uzbekistan to have greater economic independence and understand their legal rights.
    • Objectives: (Project proposals may choose one or more of these objectives):
      •  Increase the availability of business training modules to increase awareness of business and property rights for disadvantaged groups
      •  Increase the capacity of stakeholders, such as civil society organizations, local authorities, and businesses to develop impactful programs focused on supporting economic empowerment of women and members of disadvantaged groups.
      •  Establish partnerships and support mechanisms with other civil society organizations working to help women and individuals from marginalized communities gain in-demand vocational skills.
      •  Improve access to public services in rural communities through strengthened partnership between civil society and local government bodies to support the needs of underserved communities
      • Increase women’s knowledge about their rights in society and how to advocate for the, respect of those rights.
  • Strengthening Independent Media
    • Goal: Strengthen the media environment in Uzbekistan by increasing journalistic professionalism and sustainability of independent media organizations.
    • Objectives: (Project proposals may choose one or more of these objectives):
      • Facilitate collaboration between civil society organizations and local media to support the creation of accurate, informative and timely coverage of political, economic, and/or social issues
      •  Increase the capacity of media professionals, including journalism students, on media literacy, basic reporting skills and investigative journalism. techniques.

Funding Information

  • Estimated Award Ceiling: $50,000
  • Estimated Award Floor: $10,000

Eligibility Criteria

  • Not-for-profit organizations
    • Civil society/non-governmental organizations
    • Independent media organizations
  • Organizations may sub-contract with other entities, but only one, non-governmental entity can be the prime recipient of the award. When sub-contracting with other entities, the responsibilities of each entity must be clearly defined in the proposal.
