Applications are open for FHI360 Civil Society and Media Project, a four-year project (September 2014-September 2018) which is supported by USAID (the United States Agency for International Development) and implemented by FHI 360, a non-profit human development organization.
The Civil Society and Media Project aims to respond to the needs of local civil society organizations (CSOs) in Myanmar by:
- supporting civil society capacity to engage in democratic processes and policy dialogue;
- increasing the availability of and access to information on democratic governance and reform issues; and
- expanding inclusive public dialogue and political space. It does so by providing grants, technical support, and in-kind assistance.
Purpose
Grants provided under this RFA will support projects or initiatives relating to advocacy, engagement of civil society and media organizations with the Government of Myanmar (Burma) (GOM, including executive and legislative branches), awareness building or public dialogue that promote democratic reforms in Myanmar (Burma).
Issues
- Human rights
- Legal and policy reform
- Land issues
- Environmental and Natural Resource Governance including initiatives relating to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI)
- Media policy
- Inclusiveness, which includes gender equality, disability rights, and minority rights
Cross-Cutting Themes: While addressing the issues above, applicants are strongly encouraged to integrate the following cross-cutting themes into their projects, as appropriate:
- Engaging youth and strengthening their leadership
- Gender equality and women’s empowerment
- Disability rights and inclusiveness
- Innovative uses of technology
- Strengthening existing networks and coalitions
- Strengthening networks and collaborations among other civil society organizations
Activities: Applicants are encouraged to propose activities that aim to engage the public with the Government of Myanmar in the promotion of democratic reform. Possible activities may include:
- Creating new structures for citizen engagement with government, or building on new ones, including committees or town hall forums.
- Building on existing traditional associations and community groups
- Conferences, workshops, training workshops, events and other activities designed to engage citizens in advocacy, awareness-building and engagement and dialogue with the GOM on specific issues relating to the reform process at the national, regional or local level.
- For example: a) advocacy on laws, policies or regulations in compliance with accepted democratic and human rights standards; b) the promotion of better enforcement of particular laws, policies or regulations; or c) advocacy on improved access to government services.
- Activities supporting the inclusion of returned civil society leaders in advocacy and other initiatives by organizations in Myanmar.
Funding Information
- Applicants can apply for a grant of between MMK20,000,000 (twenty million kyat) and MMK100,000,000 (one hundred million kyat) for a period of up to 10 months.
- The Civil Society and Media Project expects to award 5 grants, but may award more, less, or none.
Eligibility Criteria
- This RFA is open to applications for activities that do not conflict with or duplicate activities currently funded by the Civil Society & Project in Myanmar.
- This RFA is open to applicants from anywhere in Myanmar.
- It is open to civil society organizations (CSOs); community-based organizations (CBOs); local civil society networks, consortiums and coalitions; media-focused CSOs; non-governmental media organizations and associations; and non-governmental research institutions.
- They may be either registered or unregistered.
- Consortiums and networks of organizations are encouraged to apply, so as to achieve the broadest possible coverage and sharing of experiences, perspectives and resources.
