To celebrate the mandate of UNESCO to build peace in the minds of men and women through education, the sciences, culture and communication and information, this Call is launched by the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa. It bridges both the International Day of Peace (21 September) and its 2020 theme “Shaping Peace Together”, and the United Nations Day (24 October), the 75th Anniversary of which is observed this year.
UNESCO’s longstanding commitment for meaningfully engaging with youth has been strengthened over the past decade. Youth are recognized today as a priority group cutting across all the fields of competence of the Organization, as encapsulated in the UNESCO Operational Strategy on Youth 2014-2021.
The Call targets in priority youth-led organizations from any of the thirteen countries under the UNESCO Nairobi Office (Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda).
Submissions are therefore invited for innovative ideas and proposals in the way youth-led organizations can support UNESCO’s work in any of its five areas of intervention:
- Education;
- Natural Science;
- Social and Human Sciences;
- Culture; and
- Communication and Information.
Programme Phases
This call will be in a two-phase approach:
- Expression of Interest (EOIs): Youth led organizations are invited to indicate their willingness to participate in this process and to propose ideas of innovative interventions they would implement if selected, in line with any of the following sector’s specific areas:
- Education:
- Enhancing Technical and Vocational Education policy environment;
- Developing attitudes, values and skills for Health through Education;
- Natural Sciences:
- Promoting the efforts to understand, address, mitigate, and adapt to the impacts of climate change;
- Promoting the use of science and technology and innovation to contribute to disaster risk reduction (DRR) and conflict resolution;
- Efforts to build scientific knowledge base in managing water resources in a sustainable way.
- Social and Human Sciences:
- Promotion of mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence in the community;
- Strengthening youth participation in decision making at national level;
- Engagement with and promotion of the rights of persons with disability;
- Communication and Information:
- Strengthening Capacities of Young People on Open solutions, digital skills, and information literacy;
- Education:
- Development and Submission of a Detailed Proposal:
- Only selected applicant through the Expression of Interest Phase will be invited to submit a detailed proposal, with additional information to be provided, including budget requirement for the full implementation of the proposal, with the anticipation that each best proposal per sector will be funded for implementation with up to USD 10,000.
