The Beatrice Gilmore Charitable Trust funds UK registered charities that are looking to run locally led projects in Africa and the Indian sub-continent.
The projects they support help communities address the issues that are creating vulnerability and marginalisation.
Priorities
- They will only consider making grants to those charities with objectives that enable the following:
- The prevention or the relief of poverty
- The provision of services to improve the educational attainment and opportunities for those who are most disadvantaged
- The provision of health services
- To enable those who are vulnerable because of their youth, old age, ill health, disability or financial hardship to take greater control over their lives
- The support of the communities of those who are most disadvantaged.
Funding Information
- They aim to award grants of between £5,000 and £15,000 in any one round; and they are happy to consider multi-year grants for programmes that may require a period of time to make a measurable impact; for these the award can be up to £45,000 spread over three years.
Who they fund?
- Registered UK Charities with an income of between £50,000 and £1.5m engaged in activities charitable in law that have a dynamic, supportive relationship with non-UK charitable projects and actively monitor the impact of those projects on the intended beneficiaries.
- They recognise that overheads and monitoring costs will be an essential part of project funding but these should not exceed 20% of the award in total.
- The funding should make up a minimum of 40% of the total project costs and no more than 80%.
- Faith inspired projects must be able to demonstrate that they have not nor will attempt to proselytise beneficiaries.
- Services and activities must work in empathy with the culture of the intended beneficiaries and provide them transformative opportunities. They are keen to ensure that beneficiaries participate in the design and delivery of the services, and have a role in their long-term sustainability.
- They favour organisations who need help maintaining, expanding or providing innovative services to beneficiaries, with an emphasis on quality and effectiveness.
Ineligibility Criteria
- Projects they do not fund:
- Support to non-UK based organisations
- Contributions to general appeals or circulars
- Religious institutions except to the extent that they work directly with the most disadvantaged and the grant is for suitable direct projects with the disadvantaged
- Public bodies
- Activities which primarily promote animal welfare; the arts; environment; medical research, hospitals or hospices; educational institutions; heritage; culture; sport
- Capital or building projects, although they will support the capital requirements within projects
- Activities which have already taken place
