The Southern Africa Trust invites applications for grants to commission research, convene stakeholder or policy dialogues and build capacity to strengthen alliances and coalitions to advance climate justice and accountable natural resource governance in southern Africa.
Focus Areas
- The Grant Facility will support initiatives that focus on building agency, institutional change/ policy shifts to ensure local communities, civil society organisations, and human rights defenders are working collectively to protect their lands and livelihoods from destruction, and to hold the extractive sector and governments for the delivery of equitable benefits.
- The Facility will also support initiatives that will facilitate engagement on government policies and practices related to natural resource rights, regulation, fiscal policies, and investments related to the extraction of resources. These direct policy engagements will include pursuing specific companies, government agencies, or intergovernmental bodies to modify or adopt certain policies or practices.
- The Facility will also support initiatives building agency and capabilities among grass-root movements and indigenous people to ensure their voices are being heard and changing their narrative towards improved livelihood. There is an urgent need for building alliances/coalitions around these critical issues so that the challenges of those most affected are profiled in relevant national, regional, and global policy spaces. These alliances/coalitions will open up opportunities for grassroots movements to participate in appropriate policy forums.
- They will also be supporting activities that involve working with the media to change the narrative and expose the challenges facing the grassroots and communities. In the context of the Covid19 pandemic, they can also work with the media to have policy conversations for example on the ongoing debates on fossil fuels and emerging technologies/phasing out of coal, campaigns around greenhouse gas reduction etc.
- They will also support activities that facilitate civil society organisations, citizens groups, and communities to adopt and present clearly articulated and inclusive transformation agendas on the extractive sector, climate crisis, and injustices faced by communities living near natural resources.
Funding Information
- Organisations involved in national and regional work can apply for a minimum of $50,000 over two years.
- Community-based organisations working at a local or grassroots level can apply for a minimum of $10,000 – $25,000 over twelve months (1 year).
Eligibility Criteria
The Southern Africa Trust invites grant applications from grass-root organisations/ movements, civil society groups, alliances, coalitions focused on climate justice and natural resource governance in the following countries; Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa, and Malawi.
