The European Commission (EC) has launched the Grant Program to improve Sustainable Access to Drinking Water and Basic Sanitation Services in Guinea-Bissau’s secondary cities.
Program Objectives
- The EU has chosen to focus on strategic sectors as well as the EU political agenda. Current programming focuses on the following priorities:
- Human Development;
- Green and Inclusive Economy;
- Good Governance and Stability.
- The actions selected under the Action Document (AD) “Green and Inclusive Cities” are in priority II of the MIP.
- The Green and Inclusive Cities program consists of 3 components:
- Strengthening urban sector governance and the framework for dialogue on inclusive and climate-resilient urban development;
- Reduction of the volume of undifferentiated solid waste (especially plastic waste) in Bissau;
- Improving sustainable access to drinking water and basic sanitation services for secondary cities in Guinea-Bissau.
- The first component is being implemented by UN-HABITAT.
- To better coordinate all components of the entire programme, the Green and Inclusive Cities Programme Steering Committee was created, of which UN-HABITAT has the coordinating role.
- The main objective of the aforementioned grant focuses on achieving specific objective 3 of the DA “Green and Inclusive Cities”, that is, “Improve sustainable access to drinking water and basic sanitation services in secondary cities in Guinea-Bissau”
- The secondary cities targeted by the DA “Green and Inclusive Cities” interventions are: Bolama, Buba, Gabú, Mansõa and São Domingos.
- The general objective of this call for proposals is the following: to contribute to improving sustainable access to drinking water and basic sanitation services in Bolama, Buba and Mansõa, Gabú and São Domingos.
- The specific objective(s) of this call for proposals is (are) the following:
- Ensure that the population of the target cities has safe and constant access to drinking water and sanitation services basic sanitation;
- Improve the capacity of different actors in the management and use of drinking water and sanitation in target cities;
- The population of the target cities contributes to keeping the cities healthier.
Priorities
- The priorities of this call for proposals are as follows:
- Provide a solid assessment of needs and resulting technical proposals (including the management model) to respond to needs linked to the supply and access to drinking water and sanitation services in target cities;
- Implement and/or improve systems of sustainable, inclusive access to drinking water and basic sanitation services in target cities, including technological innovations taking into account the adaptation/mitigation of climate change, biodiversity conservation and reduction of disaster risk.
- Improve the knowledge and capacities (administrative, organizational and technical) of the different target groups and relevant actors involved in the management and use of drinking water and sanitation in the target cities (local administration, Ministries of Territorial Administration, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Health, governmental and non-governmental entities, traditional and religious leaders, private activities, children, families, etc.), including the dissemination of good practices.
Funding Information
- The overall indicative amount made available under this call for proposals is EUR 5,000,000.
- Grants requested under this call for proposals cannot exceed the maximum value indicated below and must be between the following minimum and maximum values:
- minimum amount: 4,999,000 EUR
- maximum amount: 5,000,000 EUR
Duration
- The initial duration foreseen for an action cannot be less than or exceed 48 months.
Eligibility Criteria
- To be eligible for a grant, lead applicants must:
- Be a legal entity and
- Not be for profit and
- Be a non-governmental organization or a civil society organization.
