The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is pleased to announce the launch of its call for proposals for the award of grants aimed at promoting and protecting the human rights of migrants in Africa of the West by improving their access to justice.
Under the joint PROMIS project between OHCHR and UNODC, funded by the Netherlands, these grants will be awarded to civil society organizations (CSOs), law firms and national human rights institutions (NHRIs) who provide legal assistance to migrants in one – or more – of the eight project countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Mali, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, Nigeria or Senegal).
Objectives
- The objective of this grant offer is to support civil society organizations, which intervene in the promotion and protection of the human rights of migrants in West Africa by improving their access to justice, and/ or law firms and/or national human rights institutions (NHRIs ).
- In particular, it is a matter of supporting them in their actions tending to make migrants more aware of legal issues and to improve their access to legal remedies by strengthening their ability to assert their fundamental rights. Thanks to the grants, beneficiary organizations will be better able to identify human rights violations suffered by migrants, inform them of their rights and provide them with legal aid if necessary.
- This grant will also allow beneficiary organizations to have more capacity to collect data on the situation of migrants, support the filing of complaints, provide support for migrants, carry out visits to places where migrants are detained, etc. Mobile legal assistance services could also be provided to migrants, in particular to women, children, LGBTI people, as well as psycho-social assistance adapted to migrant victims of violations. They encourage organizations to explain how their services/programs are tailored to meet the specific needs of their targets.
Funding Information
Grants awarded will each be for an amount of less than USD 20,000 for a maximum duration of 12 months.
Eligibility Criteria
- To be eligible, organizations applying for the grant must meet the following criteria:
- Be a civil society organization, law firm or national human rights institution man legally incorporated and registered for at least one year;
- Work and be based in one of the following countries: Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Mali, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, Nigeria or Senegal
- Have in their mandate the assistance to migrants, the protection of the rights of migrants, and/or the promotion of access to justice for migrants in the country concerned, as well as being already engaged in one or more activities of which the subject of this call for applications.
