Historic England is looking for five creatives to undertake its inaugural Annual Commission as part of the High Street HAZ Cultural Programme.

The Connect Commissions will be undertaken in the spirit of storytelling and discovery, working with communities to creatively bring together distant High Street HAZs which share the same hopes and challenges.

The aim of the Connect Commissions is to draw out a shared sense of identity between high streets that are geographically dispersed, to help those high streets feel connected and part of something bigger. They are looking for applications for artworks inspired by shared characteristics between High Street HAZs that will highlight the links between places and communities far removed on the map, from the seaside resorts of Hastings and Blackpool, to the market towns of Hexham and Leominster. Beyond the geographical or architectural characteristics of each high street, the proposals may choose to look at shared social histories or events in each place.

The commissions will use shared characteristics or histories as a starting point to produce a new co-created artwork that is developed with communities in two or more high streets. They will be asking all High Street HAZs to contribute their own characteristics and priorities throughout 2020 and will use these to create shared themes or groupings of high streets from this research. They want to create new neighbours and inspire a dialogue between places. The commissions will:
