IOM is looking to partner with key national civil society organizations (CSOs) in Juba, Bentiu and Wau to partner with on mediation, conflict resolution and negotiation, as well as in eliminating hate speech and discrimination connected to the disease.
The purpose of the project is to use the fight against the COVID19 pandemic to promote peaceful co-existence, social cohesion and combat stigmatization, creating the conditions for cooperation needed to limit and respond to the spread of the virus.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) with support from the Reconciliation, Stabilization, Resilience Trust Fund (RSRTF) is implementing a project entitled, Promoting Peace and Solidarity in the Face of the COVID-19 in Juba, Bentiu and Wau.
Goals
The overall goal of the project is to deter violence connected to the spread of COVID-19 and to contribute to social cohesion and peaceful coexistence through the promotion of solidarity and tolerance. The outcomes of the project are as follows:
- Outcome 1: Women and youth led-CSOs are able to play key roles in mitigating and resolving conflicts connected to COVID-19 and its impacts
- Outcome 2: Women and youth led CSOs and their constituencies are able to influence government bodies tasked to manage the COVID-19 outbreak and its impacts;
- Outcome 3: Civic engagement and collective action in managing COVID-19 is strengthened.
Funding Information
- One partner will be selected from each location and supported with up to $50,000 USD to implement projects sitting at the nexus between COVID-19 and peace building.
Activities
The collaboration between IOM and implementing partners (IPs) intends to support the achievement of all program outcomes and intermediate results through the following activities:
- Develop and promote messages of tolerance and peace in relation to COVID-19 and in collaboration with Strategic Communications Specialist from IOM;
- Identify radio stations to promote messaging on tolerance and peace in relation to COVID-19 collaborating with other actors where necessary;
- Distribute solar-powered or wind-up radios to beneficiaries;
- Assist in establishing platforms where communities can have their voices and concerns heard by relevant government bodies, for instance, the National Task Force on COVID-19;
- Help in the design, inception and implementation of location-specific studies on the use of different communication technologies and strategies that can be levered for improving participatory peacebuilding in South Sudan;
- Create media platforms on social networks to enable peacebuilding messages to be amplified
- Work with communities in areas of intervention to identify small scale community infrastructures that correlate to the COVID-19 response but benefits the whole of the community to be supported through the project
- Mobilize communities and young activists in areas of intervention to find innovative ways to meet the challenges of the pandemic by working together to make improvements to their environment and provide aid to vulnerable people who are not properly assisted by other systems.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible one must be from:
Required:
- National Non-Governmental Organization (NNGO) working on peace building, governance and conflict mitigation
- NNGO that is legally registered in South Sudan
- Can avail copies of annual and financial reports (including audited reports where necessary) for the last 2 years
- Can demonstrate existing activities on peacebuilding and conflict mitigation
- Has been operational in the location of interest (Juba, Bentiu, Wau) for at least 3 years.
Desirable:
- Has available funding for programming for at least 6 months and demonstrates the ability to raise funds after the partnership comes to an end
- Clearly explains how the project activities are tailored to the context and respond to the identified needs in the location
- Health promotion or service delivery experience
