With funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), this ISID research grant opportunity seeks to provide funding for early career researchers from LMICs living and working in the field of public health.
The International Society for Infectious Disease’s research grants are one of the Society’s signature programs and are instrumental in fulfilling ISID’s commitment to funding researchers from countries that bear the greatest health and economic burden from infectious diseases. An essential element for reducing morbidity and mortality associated with these diseases in low- and lower-middle income countries (LMICs) is the provision of training, educational support, and mentoring to scientists, allied healthcare workers, epidemiologists, physicians, veterinarians, and others confronting challenges in the countries most affected.
Each grant recipient will receive monetary support for the period of the grant and will be paired with a designated mentor from within ISID’s vast network of infectious disease professionals from around the world. At the end of the grant period, recipients will receive funding to attend an ISID event to present their findings.
Areas of Interests
Qualifying Capacity Grant Areas of Interest include:
- Investigation of the epidemiology, pathophysiology and diagnosis of infectious diseases
- Epidemiology and control of hospital acquired infections (HAI)
- Modelling of cost effective interventions for infectious diseases
- Implementation of infection control measures in LMICs
- Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
- Other relevant Infectious Diseases Public health capacity building topic areas
Eligibility Criteria
- A public health researcher or scientist within eight years of completion of a PhD or equivalent professional training (MD) or public health degree
- Postgraduate professionals in their field less than five years (with or without a doctoral degree)
- Applicant is below the age of 40 years old as of March 1, 2023
- Be from and a resident living and working in a LMIC (funding restrictions apply to these list of countries)
- Be able to conduct the research project with the infectious disease focus at the applicant’s institution within a year from receiving the research grant. All grants must be completed in one year of award.
- Commit to grant recipient reporting requirements and administrative documentation necessary for grant awarding process
Requirements
Applications should be made using their online system and include the following:
- A research plan for the project related to human infectious diseases, which must include the background, methods, limitations, and references (four pages maximum)
- Applicant’s curriculum vitae (PDF of two pages maximum)
- Letter of reference from applicant’s institution or place of research
- Detailed proposed budget allocations for the $7,500 USD award along with associated timeline in MS Excel format
- Research awardees agree to written progress reports (template to be provided) periodically through the year. ISID encourages the recipients of these grants to present their results at scientific meetings and to submit outputs for publication in peer-reviewed journals including, but not limited to, the International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IJID)
