The Kaute Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of research in business and technical sciences grant to support ambitious research and to help Finnish society and companies to renew in an economically, socially and ecologically sustainable way.
By supporting ambitious research, the foundation’s goal is to help Finnish society and companies to renew in an economically, socially and ecologically sustainable way.
The Kaute Foundation is also provide financial support for education and the creation, assembly and publication of research and data within business and engineering.
Priority Areas
- A few special funds belonging to the foundation award grants targeted for certain research fields. The applicant does not have to separately allocate the application to the fund in question, it will be done by the foundation.
- The Aimo Puromäki’s special fund: awards grants for research and teaching in the energy sector, especially for the sustainable development of clean energy production and energy technology.
- The Eeva-Liisa Hirvisalo special fund: awards grants for research into the sustainable commercial and technical utilization of indigenous natural materials;
- The Niilo V. and Lauri N. Santasalo special fund: awards grants for research into clean technology processes and infection control in the fields of biotechnology, pharmacy and healthcare. Water technology grants related to clean water research will be awarded in a separate water technology research call in the fall of 2023;
- Talouselämä magazine’s special fund: awards grants for the creation, compilation and publication of research and information materials that serve Finnish business life. A special target area is research related to Finnish economic journalism.
Themes
- In the years 2021–2023, their operations will have three strategic themes: sustainable reconstruction, a data-driven future, and a diversifying society. They especially hope for applications from researchers whose work is related to these themes.
- Sustainable reconstruction: refers to topics with which the activities of companies and the society are directed towards a new, holistically more sustainable direction. These can include, for example, energy transition, circular economy, digitalization, entrepreneurship and international cooperation;
- A data-driven future: broadly encompasses the understanding and development of technologies that change society. Topics can be related for example to big data, algorithms, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data ethics or data economy.
- A diversifying society: means an interdisciplinary and heterogeneous approach, whether in science, working life or society more broadly.
Funding Information
The following grants are available in their general call for applications:
- Working grants for PhD researchers and young postdoc researchers for full-time work: The amounts of the grants in 2023 are 6,000 euros (3 months), 12,000 euros (6 months) and 24,000 euros (12 months). The 12-month grant is 28,000 euros for postdoc researchers who have completed their dissertation. The applicant must have no more than five years since the doctoral dissertation. A working grant can also be awarded for the development of university education in economics and technology;
- Grant to cover travel expenses: The grant can be used for at least a month-long research visits abroad, but not for conference visits. The maximum amount of a travel grant in 2023 is 10,000 euros;
- Grants to cover the research or publication costs: The amount of the grant in 2023 is a maximum of 5,000 euros.
Eligibility Criteria
- Grants can be awarded to Finnish citizens, communities or workgroups. International scholars that have established strong ties with Finnish universities are also eligible. Applicants are usually required to have a business or engineering degree or experience from these fields. The grant amount depends on its purpose and the total yearly amount of awarded grants;
- The signatory of the grant application is responsible for providing correct information in the application and its appendices. Incorrect and untruthful information may lead to the cancellation of an awarded grant or to a recovery claim for money already awarded;
- Notifications related to the grant will be sent to the signatory at the email address provided in the grant application. The signatory must on their own initiative notify the Foundation about any change to their contact information during the grant usage period. Application appendices must be provided to the Foundation as PDF files through the grant service. Statements must be added through a link provided by the application system. Statements have to be provided within 7 days of the end of application period.
Restrictions
- Grants are not awarded for research in medical sciences or law. The Foundation does not support basic higher education degree studies or continuing education such as MBA studies. (The Foreign Trade Special Fund’s rules restrict their travel grants to Aalto University School of Business students.)
