The U.S. Embassy Tashkent Public Diplomacy Section (PD) of the U.S. Department of State announces an open competition for organizations or individuals to submit applications to conduct innovative and creative programs to promote and improve English language usage, teaching, and learning for certain specific purposes.
Project Goal
- Support Uzbekistan’s development and internationalization by improving English language capacities among technical experts and professionals working or studying in designated fields in Uzbekistan.
Project Objectives
- The Embassy seeks applications that use English language to focus on one or more of the themes and objectives below. These themes include potential project ideas, but the Embassy welcomes creative approaches and activities to improve ESP instruction and increase the use of English across professional disciplines.
- Improving English Language Capacity for Specific Purposes
- Objective 1: Improve English language speaking, reading, and writing proficiencies of technical experts and professionals in specialized domains including but not limited to: cyber security, law enforcement and forensics, geology and mining, agriculture, water management, and cultural heritage preservation in Uzbekistan.
- Improving Curriculum and Resources for English for Specific Purposes
- Objective 2: Increase access to English-language curriculum and resources for technical experts and professionals that focus on technical vocabulary, terminology and address the communication needs of professionals in targeted fields.
- Objective 3: Facilitate networking, knowledge sharing, and collaboration in English between Uzbek professionals and international peers to exchange ideas, share insights, and discuss emerging trends in their respective fields.

- Total available funding: $500,000
- Award Ceiling: $500,000
- Award Floor: $50,000
- Length of performance period: 12 to 18 months
- Number of awards anticipated: 1-3 awards (dependent on amounts)
- Anticipated program start date: October 15, 2024
Examples of Activities can include but are not limited to:
- English-language trainings for professionals, government officials, educators, entrepreneurs, journalists, media and/or others related to your programmatic focus
- Collaboration with subject-matter experts and English language instructors to design comprehensive English language learning materials and curriculum in specific fields to increase long-term acquisition of English for specific purposes
- Programming to enhance existing English language trainings in a specific field
- Experiential programming to utilize English through workshops, conferences, publications, or other professional events
- Mentorship and peer-to-peer learning networks to provide ongoing support and guidance for professionals seeking to improve their English language skills within their respective fields.
- Immersive learning experiences incorporating industry-specific terminology, case studies, and simulations to enhance English proficiency among professionals in designated fields.
Project Audience(s)
- The Embassy encourages applications from institutions and individuals from the United States and all the regions of Uzbekistan.
- Primary audiences (beneficiaries) for proposals should be young professionals, specialists, government officials, academics, media and/or others related to your programmatic focus.
- Priority fields include cyber security, law enforcement and forensics, geology and mining, agriculture, water management, and cultural heritage preservation. All proposals must address at least one of the priority areas listed above but may include additional fields.
- Depending on the focus, projects may have secondary audiences or beneficiaries and should be noted in your proposal.
Eligibility Criteria
- The following organizations are eligible to apply:
- Must be an accredited public or private institute, university, or non-profit organization based in Uzbekistan or the United States.
