The Bristol Myers Squibb has announced a request for proposals for development and implementation of innovative approaches to address SDOH (Social Determinants of Health) and integrate social care and healthcare to reduce health disparities in Brazil, Hungary, India, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
Rationale
- The inequalities in healthcare systems present a challenge across the globe. Research has identified that social, environmental, and economic factors lay at the root of many of these inequalities with some studies suggesting that social determinants of health (SDOH) account for between 30-55% of overall health outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines SDOH as non-medical factors that influence health outcomes and are conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, age, amongst other systems that shape daily life.

- Identify partnerships
- Provide education and training for SDoH screening and linkage to care
- Integrate social care and healthcare services
- BMS is committed to addressing SDOH and the integration of social care and healthcare for patients at risk of and living with cancer (oncology and hematology) and hemoglobinopathies. The following are some examples of potential program elements:
- SDOH and health-related social care needs which may include screening, navigation assistance, and linkage to services for patients
- Integration of social care and healthcare services
- SDOH and social care community resources to serve patients
- Partnerships between SDOH/social care and healthcare delivery organizations
- Education and training for SDOH screening and linkage to care
- Cultural competency and diversity
- Partnerships between community-based organizations (CBOs) and Community Health Workers, Patient Navigators, and Financial Counselors
