The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is currently seeking applications for Clinical Scholars program, a three-year leadership program for clinically active health care providers and practitioners spanning a range of professions.
The program aims to provide providers with the opportunity to build and develop the unique skills they need to lead communities and organizations toward a Culture of Health. Strong applicants include a team that will bring knowledge of and experience in the art and science of health care services, a unique perspective as providers in health and health care systems, and understand the special professional status and relationship with patients and communities.
Program Goals
- Understand their leadership style and how to be increasingly effective in leading and managing others, as well as working collaboratively and interprofessionally.
- Advocate for positive change within their teams, organizations, and community.
- Promote creative thinking, innovation, and thought diversity.
- Understand how to appraise, synthesize, and use best evidence to guide practice and inform policy.
- Communicate and engage with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders in multiple formats.
- Negotiate to create win/win outcomes for all stakeholders.
- Positively impact complex issues that create “wicked problems” around achieving a Culture of Health across the country.
Program Activities
The Clinical Scholars program will accomplish these objectives through the following program activities:
- Intensive leadership and health equity skills development via intensive face-to-face retreats with other fellows.
- A robust and customizable distance-based learning support system to support skill development during the time between intensive retreats.
- Completion of a team-based “wicked problem impact project,” addressing a real-world significant challenge to the Culture of Health in the team’s community.
- Intensive personal executive coaching for the duration of the program, as well as the development of individual leadership development plans.
- Completion of and feedback on 10 of the leading psychological and leadership assessment tools most used in leadership development across industries and sectors.
- Team-based coaching to facilitate team learning and success on the wicked problem impact project.
- Ongoing learning in leadership, health equity, community engagement and policy to support just-intime skills via webinars, conference calls, and an online leadership library.
- Mentoring and networking both within the Clinical Scholars program and with experts nationwide.
- Access to consultants to assist with the wicked problem impact project.
- Specialized, in-depth training experiences with Academy Health. Specialized, in-depth training experiences with Community-Campus Partnerships for Health.
- Membership in the nationwide RWJF Leadership Network, an online community of thousands of leaders committed to building a Culture of Health.
- Specific program details may change in future years based on cohort experiences and program evaluation.
Award Information
The total award to the grantee organization will be up to $105,000 per team member for the three-year fellowship program. Teams may be between two and five individuals. For example, the award for a three-member team would be for a total of up to $315,000. The size of the team may not increase during the grant term. This amount includes grant funds to support the ongoing participation for all team members for all three years, including salary support, project funding, and project travel. In keeping with RWJF policy, grant funds may not be used to support clinical trials of unapproved drugs or devices, to construct or renovate facilities, for lobbying, for political activities, or as a substitute for funds currently being used to support similar activities.
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must be an organization based in the United States or its territories.
- Applicants should have the administrative and financial capacity, as well as the experience, to accept the award and to be able to distribute funds consistent with the permitted use of funds described herein, and within the approved budget.
- To apply, applicant organizations must assemble an interprofessional team of two to five members representing different health professions. Teams may consist of members from within the same or across different organizations. Teams may have a history of working together or be newly formed to address the wicked problem impact project.
- In selecting a team, applicants should consider the following:
- Team members must be clinically active health care providers and practitioners who have a desire to build a Culture of Health.
- Team members must have completed all required clinical training five or more years prior to applying and will be fully licensed or provide evidence of credentialing in their chosen health profession (e.g., audiologist, clinical counselor, dentist, dietician, nurse, nurse practitioner, nutritionist, occupational therapist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician, physician assistant, psychologist, social worker, speech therapist, veterinarian). At least one member of the team must have achieved the terminal degree for practice in his or her health-related field.
- Team members should have substantial community-focused research or program experience.
- Each team member must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or individual granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) status by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at the time of application.
- Be at least 21 years old as of September 1, 2017.
- Not be a government official1 under Section 4946 of the Internal Revenue Code; other federal, state, tribal, and local government employees are eligible.
- Not be related by blood or marriage to any Officer2 or Trustee of RWJF, or be a descendant of its founder, Robert Wood Johnson.
- Not have an official job description or responsibilities that are primarily government relations.
