The Somerset West and Taunton is inviting applications for the Food and Drink Grant.
Small and micro businesses within Somerset West and Taunton Council area can apply providing they can evidence they fall within the food and drink sector – though those businesses based in the former West Somerset area will have priority.
Funding Information
- The Council will provide a small grant (up to £2,500) towards supporting food and drink businesses implement improvements or changes that can demonstrate a clear impact on business’ future growth and/ or viability.
Eligible Projects

The following interventions provide examples of projects that could be funded through this grant scheme:
- Replacement of equipment to become more efficient
- Production of new marketing materials/ photography for websites etc
- Development of new products or services
- Specialist, sector specific training courses
- Professional subscriptions and accreditations
- Staff training
Eligibility Criteria
- Priority will be given to businesses based in the West Somerset part of the Somerset West and Taunton District Council area.

To be eligible businesses must:
- Be an independent business
- Employ 49 or less employees
- Have been operating for more than one year
- Provide two quotes for any proposed spend
- Provide full year’s accounts
- If required provide a copy of any Food certificates
- Operate from commercial premises (B&Bs, home based and mobile businesses might be eligible to apply if they can evidence that they are registered with the council as a business)
- Demonstrate the positive impact of the proposed project on their business and the wider sector
- Demonstrate deliverability of the projects and spend defrayal before end of March 2023
- Signed up to the Thrive programme
- Have attended any additional workshop as advertised on their ‘Spotlight to Food and Drink’ webpage
- Be able to complete the project/ spend by 31 March 2023
Ineligible
The following list provides examples of projects that will not be eligible under this scheme:
- Providing crisis, cash-flow support or subsidising wages for existing or new staff
- Paying back business loans
- Repaying Directors Loans
- Purchasing stock
- Purchasing vehicles/bikes
- Funding routine purchases or business outlay, such as rent of existing premises, routine maintenance etc
- Payments to HMRC for Corporation Tax, Income Tax, VAT, PAYE etc
- Funding projects that have been completed or are already underway (unless the project represents clearly a next phase or in exceptional circumstances is agreed by the Council)
- Doubling up of grant funding if other sources of grant are available to fund the project in full.
