The U.S. Embassy in New Zealand Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce an open competition for organization interested in submitting proposals to conduct training/program specific to digital journalism targeted at people in the media sphere in the South Pacific Island Region.
As a Pacific nation, the United States has long been committed to working with partners in the region to ensure the dissemination of factual information that promotes human rights, the rule of law, free access to information, and freedom of the press.
Working in concert with partners in government, civil society, associations and/or institutions, Mission New Zealand seeks to raise awareness of disinformation as a global challenge they all share, and to increase the capacity of media – including journalists, citizen journalists, and online influencers – to use the latest digital media technologies and techniques as a means to disseminate free and accurate information online. Activities and/or campaigns could include speaker programs, workshops, conferences, exchanges, reporting and academic tours etc.
Goals
Goals of the training or program should include:
- Raising awareness of mis and disinformation as a global challenge they share.
- Building the digital journalism capacity in the South Pacific Island region by sharing the latest techniques and technologies in digital or online journalism
Funding Information
- Length of performance period: Up to 24 months
- Number of awards anticipated: Number of awards issued will be dependent on your requested amounts for funding
- Award amounts: Awards may range from a minimum of $500.00 to a maximum of $60,000
- Total available funding: up to $60,000
- Type of Funding: Fiscal Year 2021 Public Diplomacy Funding
- Anticipated project start date: Between October 1, 2021 and March 2022
Eligible Projects
Examples of PAS Grants Program projects include, but are not limited to:
- Academic and professional lectures, seminars and speaker programs;
- Artistic and cultural workshops, joint performances and exhibitions; or
- Professional and academic exchanges and projects
Target Audiences
- Target people in the media sphere – which can include journalists, citizen journalists, and online influencers – in the South Pacific region: the Cook Islands, Fiji, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Islands of French Polynesia, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna.
- U.S. partners from the American affiliated Pacific including American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Hawaii can be included via an exchange of expertise component.
Eligibility Criteria
- U.S. Embassy New Zealand welcomes applications from non-profit organizations/nongovernment organizations (NGOs) and private, public, or state institutions of higher education.
- For-profit entities are not eligible to apply.
