The British Council is pleased to announce the Connections through Culture Grants to promote and seed exciting arts and cultural exchanges between the UK and countries in South East Asia – Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia.
- Artists, cultural professionals, and creative practitioners
- Art and cultural organisations, hubs, networks, and collectives.
The primary objective of CTC is to support new connections, exchanges, and collaborations between the UK and Southeast Asia that build long-term relationships among artists, creative practitioners, and art and cultural organisations, hubs, networks, and collectives.

Type of grants
- UK-SEA Collaboration Grants: Support face to face and online/digital networking and collaboration between the UK and Southeast Asia countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand) to develop art and cultural projects together or facilitate skills and knowledge exchange.
- UK-SEA Scoping and Research Grants: Support scoping new initiative for arts and cultural collaboration and research between UK and Southeast Asia countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand).
Funding Information
- UK-SEA Collaboration Grants: Up to £8,000
- UK-SEA Scoping and Research Grants: Up to £2,000
What can the grant be used for?
- The grant should be used to support the process to develop new projects with artistic expression or creativity at the core and that will result in collaborative activities including artistic and creative exchange of skills, knowledge and practice or the co-production towards new artistic and creative content. Various approaches can be employed such as art residencies, exhibitions, performances and showcases, publications, webinars, and conferences, among others.
- They encourage participation of organisations and individuals from wide geographical locations from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland of UK.
Eligibility Criteria
- UK-SEA Collaboration Grants: Open to applicants who have not yet received a CTC UK-SEA grant.
- UK-SEA Scoping and Research Grants: Open to new applicants and previous CTC UK-SEA grantees (2019, 2020 and 2021) who plans to explore new UK-SEA collaborations.
Connections Through Culture grants are open to:
- Artists
- Cultural and arts professionals
- Representatives of art collectives, creative hubs, networks or organisations researchers.
- A UK lead applicant must nominate a South East Asian Counterpart(s), or a South East Asian lead applicant must nominate a UK Counterpart(s).
- Grants are offered to applicants in all art forms: theatre, dance, visual arts, literature, film, music, architecture, design, and fashion. Inter- and cross-disciplinary practices are encouraged.
Ineligible
Connections Through Culture grants are not eligible for:
- Academic institutions
- Funding bodies
- organisational overheads and general running costs
- South East Asian nationals living outside of South East Asia
- UK individuals based/living outside of the United Kingdom unless temporarily living but retaining a home address in the United Kingdom and defined by Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs as ‘resident the in the UK’ for tax.
