The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy to Ethiopia has announced an opportunity for local non-profits and non-government organizations engaged in youth programs to administer the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) Alumni Engagement Project.
The project includes networking, community service and mentoring activities plus eight $1,000 small grant opportunities. The small grants are intended to help fellows identify like-minded alumni to develop a project and implement activities in their community.
Target audiences include, but are not limited to aspiring entrepreneurs, women, university students, the disabled community, children, youth, vulnerable populations, legal clinics, etc. The implementing partner will be responsible for sub-awards of the small grants using U.S. Government Federal Assistance Award guidelines and for monitoring the implementation of the eight projects.
Funding Information
The award amount is a maximum of $25,000 with an implementation period of up to one year.
Networking
The U.S. Embassy along with the 2017 MWFs will work closely with the implementing NGO to organize a one-day alumni network summit in spring/summer 2018. The summit will gather all MWF fellows and focus on the theme, “The Future is Here: Mandela Washington Fellows in Ethiopia.” The implementing partner will facilitate all necessary logistics and administration of the summit.
Mentoring
The mentoring element provides opportunities for the 2017 MWFs to transfer their knowledge and experience to their mentees. This can be done through using the small grants opportunity or other means that help fellows extends their reach to Ethiopian youths. The implementing partner will work with the U.S. Embassy to facilitate the mentoring activities using various platforms (e.g. Skype, Zoom, telephone) as well as in person when needed.
Community service
2017 Fellows will be engaged with local communities to carry out ideas that will make a difference. These can include facilitating training, workshops, presentations, or programs focused on shared interests and community needs. Fellows may use the small grants opportunity to design and implement projects that benefit their communities.
