The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad invites eligible organizations to submit proposals to create a Children’s Interpretive Center in the Erbil Citadel’s newly renovated space.
The conservation and restoration of a heritage building complex at the Erbil Citadel was completed with funds from another U.S. Embassy Baghdad grant with the view to creating a space for children to learn about the history of this ancient structure.
The target audience will be school groups for children under the age of 12, families with their children, and /or children visiting the Citadel as tourists. The project is expected to last 12 months, after which the center will be ready for schools, tourists, and the general public. The governments of Iraq and the United States are committed through the U.S.-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement to the establishment of affiliations between Iraqi and U.S. institutions to protect Iraqi Cultural Heritage.
In addition, the program implementer will:
- During the implementation of the program, the recipient will be responsible for the following activities:
- Signing an Agreement with the High Commission for the Erbil Citadel Revitalization (HCECR): During the first month of the grant, the implementer will be responsible for signing an agreement with HCECR to set up plans to establish the interpretive narratives in the center.
- Prepare and set up high-quality, low-maintenance communication and learning materials and related interpretive infrastructure appropriate for children in coordination with HCECR in the center.
- Coordinate with HCECR to assign at least two HCECR staff to be trained on how to communicate with and guide children to use the center in the best possible way.
- Provide training for at least two HCECR staff on communication materials, related interpretive infrastructure and administering and managing the center.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be a U.S. non-profit organization meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c) (3).
- Have demonstrated experience developing and administering similar programs;
- Have the capacity to operate in Iraq and have active partnerships with organization(s) operating in Iraq needed to support the program.
