The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is inviting proposals to Support Local CBOs / NGOs for their contribution to environmental protection and local development through local initiatives.
This Program is aimed at solving development problems, promoting social progress and establishing better living conditions for the populations. It offers interventions within the framework of environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Objectives
The allocations should allow the submitting organizations to contribute to initiatives that will:
- Contribute to the protection of the environment in at least one of the following sectors:
- collective safeguarding of land and sea sites,
- climate-smart and innovative agro-ecology,
- Co-advantage of access to energy sources emitting little carbon,
- Coalition for Local, National and Global Chemicals Management.
- Contribute to the development and well-being of communities by integrating into initiatives activities that allow project beneficiaries to improve their standard of living and / or living environment.
Intervention Areas
The GEF Microfinance Program in its strategy for operational phase 7 (OP7) gives priority to the grouping of initiatives in a given area. For the OP7, two landscapes were selected. It is:
- Landscape of Bayanga and its outskirts selected as a priority area because of the ZangaSangha National Park, a UNESCO heritage, which has one of the most attractive biodiversity at the global level;
- Landscape of Mambéré Kadéï and Nana Mambéré, which are secondary areas in OP7, due to severe land degradation.
Types of Intervention
- The Global Environment Fund Microfinance Program (PMF / GEF) provides allocations for the second year of operational phase 7. Projects will focus on local initiatives that tend to improve the environment in GEF areas that are:
- the fight against the effects of climate change through projects: reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, production of non-polluting energy from renewable sources (solar, water, compost, etc.);
- the conservation of biodiversity through initiatives aimed at: securing and / or enriching ecosystems and environments with biological resources, defending areas with fragile ecosystems containing species of high ecotourism value, etc.
- the fight against land degradation by implementing projects to: transform degraded or degrading land to make it land for cultivation or grazing, restore environments in the process of weakening to stabilize fragile ecosystems, etc.
- reducing the effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), chemicals and solid wastes through initiatives that will reduce the proliferation of these products and wastes;
- the conservation of international waters through initiatives which will allow the conservation of the shores and the fishery resources.
- Priority will be given to initiatives / projects providing innovation that can be easily appropriated by grassroots communities.
Expected Results
The projects financed by the PMF / GEF must provide answers to the environmental problems encountered by the grassroots communities. These projects must take into account community resilience and the sustainability of achievements. The allocations implemented by the beneficiaries must result in:
- a favorable change of the local environment where the project will take place, in at least one of the areas;
- Ensure the sustainability of achievements by empowering and involving local actors in the identification and implementation of the initiative;
- The sustainability and / or reproduction of the initiative by the actors by setting upself financing mechanisms and / or resource mobilization strategies ;
- The visibility of project results through the production of imaged media, tee shorts, etc. allowing to ensure the valorization of the results as well as, the popularization and the visibility of the achievements of the project.
Eligibility Criteria
Organizations that meet the following criteria are eligible:
- Be a grassroots community organization (CBO), an NGO, a group or a legally recognized institution in the Central African Republic;
- Apply through a project that meets the GEF environmental micro-projects format: the request for an allowance must not exceed US $ 50,000;
- To prove that the organization has the capacity to implement the submitted project (cf. CSO capacity assessment sheet);
- To prove that the organization is located in the project area and / or can have an operational basis (referees on the site and proof of documents if possible);
- Have justified all the advances granted by the PMF / GEF during operational phase 6 for the former beneficiaries of the allocations.
