The Community Foundation has announced a call for applications for the Ultach Fund to continue to fund grass roots community and voluntary groups to promote the Irish language.
The Ultach Fund was established with capital from The Iontaobhas Ultach Trust. It exists to support the work of communities across Northern Ireland who wish to use and promote the Irish language, through the work of registered charities, voluntary and community groups.
Funding Information
- Grants are available up to £2,000.
Type of Projects
Promotion of the Irish language through, but are not limited to:
- Irish language classes for adults
- Irish language social events for adults
- Irish language learning resources
- Family-centred projects
Topics could include, but are not limited to:
- A range of classes for adult learners of Irish
- Irish-language conversation circles
- Social events such as coffee mornings, book clubs, quizzes, etc.
- Irish language resources for adult learners of Irish
- Talks and presentations on various aspects of Irish language and culture such as, but not limited to: the history of the Irish language, Protestant Gaelic Tradition, folklore, placenames, surnames, etc.
The Foundation will not fund
- The Community Foundation will not fund organisations or activities which promote causes that are contrary to the purposes. Causes and activities that are contrary to the purposes include, but may not be limited to, those outlined in the investment policy. They will not therefore fund organisations or activities which they determine are linked to the promotion of armaments, alcohol, human rights abuses, tobacco or pornography;
- The advancement of religion. This includes organisations whose purposes include the advancement of religion;
- The establishment of endowment of any school or institution providing further education within the meaning of the Education and Libraries (Northern Ireland) Order 1972;
- The provision of assistance to any Housing Association within the meaning of the Housing (Northern Ireland) Order 1976;
- Promotion of religious or political activity, including any flags and emblems that may deem to be associated with such;
- Trips outside of Northern Ireland;
- Applications from individuals;
- Applications from statutory organisations;
- Projects lasting longer than twelve months;
- Salaries;
- Purchase of vehicles;
- Holiday schemes;
- Parties and shopping trips;
- Activities that duplicate existing services;
- Retrospective funding;
- Substitution for statutory funding;
- Groups who have not complied with previous monitoring requirements;
- Organisations with an annual income exceeding £250,000.
Eligibility Criteria
- The fund is open to registered charities and constituted grass roots community and voluntary groups based in Northern Ireland.
- Priority is given to applications from small groups, typically with an annual income of less than £250,000, as evidenced in the most recent set of accounts.
