USAID/Afghanistan announces Urban Health Initiative (UHI) Program

Grants for Leveraging Health Information Technology to Address and Reduce Health Care Disparities (US)

The United States Government, as represented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID/Afghanistan), is seeking applications for a cooperative agreement from qualified entities to implement the Urban Health Initiative (UHI) Program.

The purpose of Urban Health Initiative (UHI) is to improve public and private health services delivery in FIVE major urban cities through:

UHI will be a new USAID activity in Afghanistan. This is a five-year technical assistance (TA) Activity with elements of service delivery that are necessary for filling gaps in access to, and quality of, essential health services in five urban cities. The Activity aims to improve health outcomes of people living in urban areas particularly focusing on the health of women and children and other vulnerable populations such as Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and communities living in slums.

Activity Goal

USAID has planned this five-year technical assistance (TA) and service delivery project to support the implementation of health service delivery in urban areas. The primary aim is to improve health in urban areas in a way that benefits the most vulnerable populations. Specific focus will be given to reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health; communicable diseases particularly TB and vaccine preventable diseases (VDPs); and nutrition.

Activity Objectives

The activity will improve health outcomes for the urban population by achieving the following four objectives:

Award Information

USAID intends to award one (1) Cooperative Agreement pursuant to this notice of funding opportunity. Subject to funding availability and at the discretion of the Agency, USAID intends to provide $104 million in total USAID funding over a five (5) year period.

Geographic Focus

This activity will be implemented in five major cities in Afghanistan: Kabul, Kandahar, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, and Jalalabad focusing on public and private health facilities.
