The Porirua City Council has launched the Young People’s Fund to offer grants for projects or initiatives that will have a significant impact on children and young people living in the city.
Purpose
To support projects for children and young people, who don’t get the same opportunities as others, and who want to make a difference in their community, that:
- Improve children and young people’s health, education, skills and wellbeing and/or
- Enable them to participate, contribute, connect with their community/environment and/or
- Be involved in city decision making.
Priorities
The city council will give priority to projects that match with one or more of these focus areas:
- Diversity and inclusion
- LGBTQI+.
- Cultural identity and belonging.
- Youth programmes that focus on migrants and former refugees.
- Maori-led youth programmes.
- Pacific-led youth programmes
- Environmental
- Te Awarua-o-Porirua harbour and catchment.
- Waste reduction and minimization.
- Climate change mitigation.
- Food sustainability and education
- Health and Wellbeing
- Mental health initiatives.
- Strengthening social connections.
- Healthy and active lifestyles.
Funding Information
There are two tiers of funding available, one for larger or long-term projects, and the other for smaller community projects.
- Tier 1: Two grants available of $50,000 a year, for up to three years. Next available in 2024.
- Tier 2: Five or six grants of $6000 as a one-off payment. Available annually.
Projects
Projects and initiatives must:
- If possible demonstrate that children and young people have contributed to the design of the project.
- Benefit children and/or young people aged 0 to 24 years who live in Porirua.
- Increase the capabilities and resilience of children and/or young people.
- demonstrate partnership, in-kind, joint funding, collaboration with local people and/or other organisations.
- Demonstrate how the project aligns to one or more the three focus areas of diversity and inclusion, environmental, and health and wellbeing. You can read more about these on the next page.
- Engage children and young people in activities that contribute to their personal development and/or make a positive contribution to the local community.
- Describe how the project is meeting a current need and provides a valuable service in Porirua.
- Describe how success will be measured throughout the project. If the funding request is for an existing project the application must show how its meets the criteria and how the future delivery will be enhanced and/or expanded.
Who is the fund for?
- The Fund is for projects aimed at children and young people aged 0 to 24, who live in the Porirua area. The Fund is designed to be available to organisations that have a project or idea which focuses on children and young people and clearly aligns with Council’s ‘Children and Young People’ Strategic Priority and identified focus areas.
- The Fund aims to support projects for up to three years that are delivered in the Porirua area. The application should be based on a partnership agreement between children and young people and organisations to co-design, develop and implement projects.
- Existing projects, that meet the criteria, will be considered if funding will enhance or expand the current provision.
Eligibility Criteria
- Organisations that are legal entities and are based or deliver programmes/services in Porirua City, or have a strong connection to Porirua.
- If applicants are a group of young people, they must be supported by a legal entity who will act as the fund holder, ie, a young person’s school or registered organisation.
- Organisations that have a primary focus working with children and young people aged 0 to 24 years or can demonstrate their capability and experience to work in this area.
- Preference will be given to projects that clearly align with the focus areas and those that can demonstrate partnership, in-kind support, joint funding, collaboration and ‘buy-in’ from children and young people.
