Ever wondered how you could do more to help your own community? Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a new way for people to have a say in how public funds can be used to make a difference.
Become more actively involved in spending decisions in your community. Learn new skills, meet new people, build community relations and have fun.
Themes
Your challenge is to come up with an idea to make a difference in your area under one of the following themes
- Arts & Culture (e.g. festival and events etc.)
- Community & Environment (e.g. volunteering; environmental improvements; community resilience etc.)
- Education & Skills (e.g. educational programmes; workshops; books/equipment etc.)
- Equality & Inclusion (e.g. cultural diversity projects etc.)
- Safety (e.g. tackling bullying; online safety etc.)
- Sport, Health & Wellbeing (e.g. Sports equipment; Mental health initiatives)
A Youth-led Steering Group will review your ideas against the following criteria:
- Safe
- Legal
- Feasible within budget and timeframe
- Youth centred and in line with one or more of the themes above.
Funding Information
- Council has opened a special PB fund of £20,000 for community projects.
- £2,500 will be available in each Local Growth Area to deliver the ideas you come up with.
- Individual projects can apply for awards of up to £1,000 or up to £500.
Areas
- 8 Local Growth Areas across Derry and Strabane – Ballyarnett, Foyleside, The Moor, Waterside, Faughan, Sperrin, Strabane Town and The Derg – are covered by Local Community Plans.
Who can apply?
- Anyone aged between 12 to 25 can submit an idea.
- To promote cooperation and team building submissions must be from groups of two people or more. The rest is up to you – just choose one or more theme and get creative.
- The successful candidates must be able to deliver their project or event before the end of February 2021.
Criteria
- For local young people (12-25), schools, constituted community, voluntary sector and sports groups.
- Projects must be delivered in Derry/Londonderry Strabane and benefit the young people aged 12-25 in the Derry and Strabane District.
- Projects must be submitted by the application deadline, those submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
- Applicants need to ensure that they demonstrate through the application process that their project fits within the themes and eligibility criteria. Failure to meet these criteria will not allow the application to progress to stage two of the process (the video stage).
- Projects must be delivered by 28th February 2021.
- Profit-making companies will not be eligible.
- Examples of what can be applied for; events, workshops, performers, specialist facilitator/ trainer or youth worker fees (not related to other programme costs or current salaried costs), funding towards marketing campaigns to raise awareness of specific issues identified by young people, equipment for projects e.g. electronic and gaming, litter picks, safety equipment, sports kits, outdoor gym equipment, darts, pool table etc.
- Examples of what cannot be applied for; funding for capital works, staffing costs for salaried staff, maintenance of existing equipment, facilities in a venue that do not meet any of the themed criteria
- All applications and programmes need to follow current public health advice to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
- The final decision regarding eligibility rests with the Youth Making it Happen Steering Group who will assess eligibility against the criteria: Safe, Legal, Feasible within budget and timeframe, Youth centred and in line with one or more of the themes: Arts and Culture, Community and Environment, Education and Skills, Equality and Inclusion, Safety, Sport, Health and Wellbeing.
