The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), supported by the Canadian International Development Agency, provides funds for grassroots initiatives that promote sustainable development and local innovations and offer opportunities for people to improve their lives. CFLI provides modest funding for small-scale, high-impact projects in more than 125 countries eligible for official development assistance (ODA). The CFLI has an annual programming budget of $26.8 million, with projects averaging $30,000 each. Projects are planned and implemented mainly by local organizations, and are selected and approved by the relevant Canadian Embassy or High Commission.
The majority of CFLI funding is to be directed toward local civil society organizations (including non-governmental organizations) and other institutions working at the local level.
CFLI projects focus on issues like gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, human rights, democracy and governance, peace and security, climate action, economic growth etc.
The CFLI also provides modest financing for projects in response to natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies.
