The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) is calling for entries for the 5th edition of the West Africa Media Excellence Conference and Awards (WAMECA) to promote and defend the right to freedom of expression of all persons particularly the media and human rights defenders in West Africa.
Objectives
Based on the context analysis, the vision, mission and the overall goal, the organisation’s work will be aimed at achieving the following objectives during the period 2015-2020:
- Noticeable improvement in respecting and protecting the right to freedom of expression by state and non-state actors in West Africa
- The public’s right to access information is guaranteed by regional and national laws and respected in practice
- The media in West Africa are more independent and professional, and contribute to democracy and development in the respective countries in the region.
- The MFWA has efficient systems, adequate funding from diversified sources, broad network of national partners as well as competent and highly motivated staff
Categories
WAMECA 2021 will honour outstanding works of journalism in West Africa in the following categories:
- Health Reporting
- Environmental Reporting
- Anti-Corruption Reporting
- Investigative Reporting
- Human rights Reporting
- Business and SMEs Reporting
- Telecoms and ICTs Reporting
- Special Covid-19 Reporting
Eligibility Criteria
- The Awards are opened to journalists from print, electronic and online media in Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone countries in West Africa.
- An Applicant must be West African, working with and for a media organisation(s). An Entry for the Awards must have been published or broadcast between the period January 1 to December 31, 2020.
Submission Instructions
- Newspaper: Kindly scan the page(s) in the newspaper and attach.
- Radio: Kindly upload audios that are more than 10MB in size on Soundcloud or Google Drive and attach the link. Make sure to give access.
- TV: Upload video on YouTube and attach the link.
