You are a journalist or a media and want to strengthen your skills and those of your teams in data journalism to investigate gender and gender inequalities while promoting open governance? You are French-speaking, you have an interest in gender issues, you are part of a traditional media, an online media, you work as a freelance journalist or you publish a blog in one of the following four countries: Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Niger, and Cameroon? Then you can apply for this!
This project will allow you initially to approach and master new skills in data journalism (recovery, analysis, processing, and visualization) within the framework of three 5-day sessions for the first two and 4 days for the last.
Goals
- The aim of this call for projects is to select 6 journalists per country, i.e. a total of 24 beneficiaries from Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Niger or Madagascar and to strengthen their skills in data journalism through training and training program. The goal is to produce 2 surveys per country, per trinomial. You can therefore apply alone, in pairs, or in trinomial, knowing that their teams will group you in threes during the selection.
- At the end of the Médialab pour Elles project, the ambition is to support these 24 journalists in carrying out 8 collaborative surveys for 5 to 6 months. Once completed, the surveys will be disseminated through their media or partner media for independent journalists.
Funding Information
- Funding of up to 2,000 euros per survey and regular support for 5 to 6 months will help you carry out a collaborative survey project, together with the other beneficiary journalists on the issues. Gender-related based on open data.

Who can apply?
- Anyone who is part of a media organization (written press, radio, television, web, blog or other editorial structure) or working as a freelance (justifying a platform or media to publish their final project and a status to receive the grant) in one of the four countries mentioned.
- Being able to speak and write fluently in French (the workshops will be conducted in French, and the surveys must necessarily be disseminated at least in French if translation).
- Any level in data journalism.
- Having an interest in the digital, investigation, opening up public data and gender, but also a taste for teamwork.
- Have a working laptop and charger available for training.
- Reside in one of the four target countries, regardless of location. Transport costs to the training city will be covered by CFI.
Selection criteria
- Editorial relevance (50/100): They are looking for data journalism and survey projects that address the topic of gender and gender inequalities in Francophone Africa in a relevant and innovative way. Proposals must be documented and the relevant sources must be identified and mentioned. Particular attention will be paid to the feasibility of the surveys.
- Profile of the journalist (s) (30/100): If no specific diploma or qualification is required, profiles with significant investigative journalism experience will be highly appreciated. An interest in digital, innovative media and IT is also sought. Finally, profiles mentioning previous publications, projects and research related to gender and gender inequalities will be highlighted. Regarding media managers or independent journalists who present themselves collectively, attention will be paid to female candidates.
- Innovation potential (20/100): The project targets innovative projects, editorial approaches and surveys that invite the public, readers and listeners to question themselves and to act, within the framework of inequalities between women and men. Indeed, this work and publications aim to make information and data which are not otherwise accessible to everyone understandable.
