The Thomson Reuters Foundation, in partnership with MISA-Mozambique , is looking for Portuguese-speaking journalists, based anywhere in Africa, who are motivated to understand how their country may be losing money through illicit means.
The Wealth of Nations program is a long-term commitment and participating journalists must commit to all elements of the program by signing an agreement to that effect. These elements include:
- Intensive training on illicit financing reporting, which will take place between Monday, June 28, and Friday, July 16, 2021;
- The production of articles on illicit financial flows;
- A mentorship and support program that will help produce these articles.
Journalists are only considered to have completed the program when they have completed all the elements, including for those who participate in the guidance and support plan, as well as the production of at least one article on illicit financial flows, and they only receive theirs. certificates at this time.
Program Advantages
- If selected, you will participate in an intensive virtual/online workshop that will cover illicit financing, reporting on companies, accounts and budgets, and investigative techniques.
- The participant must propose one or more ideas for stories that he/she intends to work on under the program; if selected by the guidance plan, they will provide experienced journalists who will follow up on your reports until publication/broadcast.
- You’ll have exclusive access to expert knowledge through the network of illicit finance experts.
- You will also have access to reporting ideas and editorial advice and will be invited to share your knowledge and experience with participants from other regions.
Format
- During week 1, participants will have to do some self-study, including reading and exercises.
- During weeks 2 and 3, participants should be able to spend 4 hours a day watching live video sessions with trainers and/or expert speakers, asking questions, sharing ideas, learning new skills and applying them. In addition to the live sessions, participants must allow 1-2 hours for reading or offline assignments in their own time.
Eligibility Criteria
- Journalists with a minimum of two years of professional experience who are fluent in Portuguese.
- It will be an advantage if you are familiar with investigative journalism and funding reporting and/or, more generally, have some experience with numbers, but if you have a strong motivation to know and understand these issues, they will consider your application. Early career journalists are invited to apply.
- Must be willing to spend a significant amount of time working on stories about illicit financing.
- Independent journalists and journalists linked to the media can apply. Journalists working for a media organization must obtain permission from their editor in chief to participate. Independent journalists must provide proof that one or more media outlets are willing to accept their work.
- Journalists working in one or more media can apply (print, digital, radio or television).
- Journalists must be established in Africa and work for one or more media outlets.
- Candidate journalists must speak fluent Portuguese.
