UNDP Regional Support Centre for Africa (RSC), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, invites interested universities, think tanks and research institutions to indicate their interest in undertaking research project(s) under the UNDP regional and multi-country Programme on Preventing and Responding to Violent Extremism in Africa.
The program is a four (4) year regional project anchored in the Regional Programme based on an extensive consultation process with the African Union, Regional Economic Communities (including IGAD and ECOWAS), bilateral partners, CSOs including faith based institutions, academia/research institutions, media organizations, African governments and the wider UN family.
The initiative promotes a regional approach given cross border and sub-regional dynamics demanding a coordinated regional approach.
Focus Areas
- Rule of law and Security: national institutions and communities are better equipped to prevent and address violent extremism
- Disengagement and reintegration: members of extremist groups are disengaged and reintegrated into communities
- Socio-economic factor: At risk youths and vulnerable people benefit from livelihood initiatives
- Media, technology and public awareness: violent narratives and propaganda are countered
- Community resilience: communities and religious institutions are resilient to the effects of violent extremism
- Setting up national observatories to analyse violent extremism at the national levels and provide policy advice
- Gender specific engagements: women are empowered to play a leading role in prevention and response to violent extremism
- Research and advocacy: Regional and national policies and programming are informed by research and analysis on violent extremism
- Regional Level interventions: Regional and sub-regional entities are coordinated and enabled to prevent and address violent extremism
Geographical Focus
Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, Cameroon, Chad, Kenya, Mauritania, Niger, CAR, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
Eligibility Criteria
- Renewed license and/or registration certificate with Articles of Incorporation (if any) to testify legally recognized research institution
- Company Profile, which should not exceed fifteen (15) pages, including printed brochures relevant to the consultancy service is being sought
- Minimum of five years proven track record of high quality research that meets international standards
- Documented expertise and research capacity in the area of violent extremism
- Documented expertise and research capacity in Africa and gender
- Extensive experience in primary research i.e. surveys, direct interviews etc.
- Research institutions based in Africa or those who have partnerships with institutions in Africa are encouraged to apply.
- Research institution strong financial standing to exhibit its ability to undertake the project successfully.
