I Tatti/Museo Nacional del Prado Joint Fellowship Program

Fellowship

Deadline: 15-Nov-2025

A joint residential fellowship for the 2026-2027 academic year invites early and mid-career art historians to pursue advanced research on the relationship between Spain and Italy during the Renaissance.

Focus: Preference given to advanced research projects that address the relationship between Spain and Italy (including transnational connections and dialogues with Latin America) during the Renaissance, broadly understood historically to include the period from the 14th to the 17th century.

The I Tatti/Museo Nacional del Prado Joint Fellowship spans two prestigious institutions and two culturally rich locations: the fall term at Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid from mid-September to mid-December 2026, and the spring term at Villa I Tatti in Florence from January to June 2027. Fellows must have a PhD in hand at the time of application and cannot be pursuing a second doctorate. Candidates must be fluent in English and Spanish and possess at least reading knowledge of Italian, underpinned by strong backgrounds in Italian, Spanish, and Latin American studies. Approval by both hosting institutions is required. Fellows are expected to undertake original research using available city-based resources and may propose part of a larger project. Preference is given to those without prior affiliation with either host. Renewals, repeats, or deferments are not allowed.

At Villa I Tatti, fellows are expected to reside in the Florence area, spend a minimum of three days weekly at the Center, and engage with its intellectual community. They enjoy full access to the Biblioteca Berenson daily, lunch with fellow appointees on weekdays, and are provided with a reserved desk or carrel. The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of USD 5,200 and a relocation allowance up to USD 1,800. Housing may be provided rent-free (utilities charged) when available, or else a subsidy will offset rental costs. Fellows must secure their visa, permesso di soggiorno, and health coverage, including for accompanying family when applicable.

At the Museo Nacional del Prado, fellows must remain in Madrid throughout the term—except for research-related travel—and participate in the Study Center’s activities. They may not concurrently hold any other fellowship or teaching position. Fellows are responsible for obtaining liability and accident/health insurance. Application closes on 15 November 2025.
