Submissions open for Digital Humanism Fellowship

CFPs: Emergency Initiative for the most Vulnerable Population in the Conflict-affected regions of Ukraine

Deadline: 21-Sep-2025

The Institute for Human Sciences is inviting applications for its Digital Humanism Fellowship, aimed at bringing distinguished scholars from various academic fields to pursue advanced research on all facets of the digital society. Each semester, a Senior Visiting Fellow spends one month at the Institute, accompanied by two Junior Visiting Fellows who carry out their own research projects and have opportunities for collaboration and discussion with the Senior Fellow.

Junior Visiting Fellow candidates are expected to focus their research on digitalization’s impact on societal, economic, and geopolitical issues, as well as other relevant topics in the humanities and social sciences. These fellows will spend three consecutive months at the Institute in Spring 2026, generally starting on the first day of the month and finishing on the last.

Postdoctoral applicants, meaning those who have defended their PhD by the application deadline, will receive a monthly stipend of EUR 3,300. Doctoral candidates still pursuing their degree will receive EUR 2,750 per month to cover accommodation, living expenses, travel, health insurance, and other incidental costs during their stay in Vienna. Fellows are also provided with office space, internet access, research and administrative support, in-house lunch, and other services free of charge.

To be eligible for the Junior Visiting Fellowship, applicants must currently be doctoral candidates or have obtained their PhD within four years prior to applying. A jury of experts selects the finalists, with decisions announced in November 2025. The jury’s decisions are final and not accompanied by individual feedback.

Applications must include a brief letter of motivation explaining how the fellowship will benefit the candidate, their connection to the Institute’s mission, and their research or writing goals. A project summary of no more than 550 characters and a detailed project proposal (up to 7,500 characters) outlining objectives, current state of research, methods, and schedule are also required. Applicants must submit a CV with a list of publications and two letters of recommendation from scholars familiar with their academic work. These letters must be submitted directly by the referees during the application period. All materials should be submitted in English.
