Canada has announced funding of more than $ 27 million dollars would be allocated to humanitarian partner organizations to support the people of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria to meet the vital needs of more than 20 million people affected by drought, food shortages and the ongoing conflict in the Lake Chad Basin.
According to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Matt DeCourcey, “People in the Lake Chad Basin are facing a catastrophic humanitarian situation, and their living conditions continue to deteriorate as a result of conflict, food insecurity and natural disasters. Canada is proud to provide humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of the most vulnerable and to ensure that emergency assistance reaches those who need it. This support will save lives and help alleviate the suffering of people in Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria.
In Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, millions of people need essential help because of conflict, natural disasters and epidemics. Particularly in Cameroon, more than half a million people are displaced by conflict in the Lake Chad Basin and the Central African Republic, putting additional pressure on the already limited resources and basic services in the communities of Chad.
With Canada’s contribution, vulnerable populations will receive food, treatment for acute malnutrition, clean water, health care, protection services, including psychosocial support, and livelihood support.
