The Journalism 360 Challenge is an open call for ideas using immersive storytelling to discover new ways to engage audiences and advance the field of journalism.
The challenge is open to journalists, technologists, entrepreneurs, gamers, software developers and academics, news organizations, startups, established businesses, nonprofits and individuals, anywhere in the world.
Journalism 360, sponsored by John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Online News Association, engages a global network of news organizations, journalists, technologists and educators on a mission to accelerate the understanding and production of immersive journalism.
Prize Information
Winners will receive a share of $100,000 for early-stage projects that help expand best practices for technologies including, but not limited to: 360 video, spatial audio, augmented reality, virtuality reality and mixed reality. Projects might build tackle new techniques to engage audiences, develop workflows for replication and iteration or help newsrooms and journalists adopt immersive storytelling tools and methods.
As required by IRS rules, the Challenge funds can’t be used to:
- Engage in direct lobbying activities (i.e., contacting legislators regarding specific legislation).
- Engage in grassroots lobbying activities (i.e., encouraging the public to contact legislators regarding specific legislation).
- Participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for elective public office.
- Support a voter registration drive (unless the grantee is a Section 4945(f) organization).
- Benefit a private party (other than through providing grant funds to conduct activities in furtherance of charitable and educational purposes).
Eligibility Criteria
- The challenge is open to anyone committed to experimenting with immersive media, news organizations, businesses, nonprofits, universities and individuals anywhere in the world can apply.
