The Irish-language Theatre Award Grant is requesting applications to support the development, creation, production, and touring of high-quality theatre in the Irish language across Ireland.
The focus areas of this award include supporting Irish-language theatre development, play development, theatre creation, large-scale production and touring, improving access to Irish-language theatre for wider audiences, encouraging excellence, innovation and experimentation in theatre, supporting collaborative and interdisciplinary theatre creation, strengthening dramaturgical support, enabling presentation of Irish-language theatre to general audiences, and expanding audience reach through subtitles or dual translation.
The Irish-language Theatre Award is designed to support artistic projects in theatre ranging from play development to large-scale production and touring. It aims to ensure that more people can experience high-quality theatre in the Irish language throughout the country.
The award is structured into three strands, each supporting different stages of theatre development. Strand 1 focuses on play development with funding up to €15,000, supporting the creation of one new Irish-language play where the playwright plays a central role in the creative process. Priority is given to projects with a strong track record in Irish-language theatre and those demonstrating excellence, innovation or experimentation.
Strand 2 focuses on theatre creation with funding up to €25,000, supporting the development of new Irish-language work in collaborative and interdisciplinary contexts. Priority is given to proposals showing strong dramaturgical support, collaboration, and a proven track record in Irish-language theatre.
Strand 3 focuses on production and touring with funding up to €300,000. This strand supports mid- to large-scale Irish-language theatre productions and their presentation to audiences across the country. Priority is given to artistically ambitious and technically excellent productions, especially those offering subtitles or dual translation to broaden audience access.
The award is open to professional artists and organisations with a demonstrable track record in theatre practice. Strands 1 and 2 are open to applicants based on the island of Ireland, while Strand 3 is open only to applicants based in the Republic of Ireland.
