This competition seeks to recognize and honor outstanding reports on elections in Southeast Asia.
The ExcEl Award, a journalism award for Southeast Asia is back this year after having found the best works in journalism two years ago. This year amid the pandemic Covid-19, the competition keeps going to give honour to reports on elections (during electoral processes) in the region aimed at promoting fair, safe, and professional media election coverages.
The coverages ranging from features to investigative stories that do not only raise public awareness and understanding of critical issues but also enhance and broaden public discourse that in turn contributes to achieving aspirations for genuine and meaningful democracy.
Categories
This year the award will be given to the best in four categories:
- Best Feature Story
- Best Investigative Story
- Best Data-driven Story
- Best Commentary
Eligibility Criteria
- The ExcEl Award 2021 is open to local journalists in all Southeast Asian Countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Timor Leste, Thailand, and Vietnam. Entries in languages other than English (any languages or dialects in the Southeast Asian region) should be accompanied with English translations.
- Journalists from various platforms like; text (magazine, newspaper, tabloid, printed bulletin), audio (broadcast, streaming, podcast), video (television, online video), and multimedia (published on one more than medium) can submit their works.
- Global Citizenship: How does the applicant embody and exemplify the values and practices of a Global Citizen?
- Proof of concept: Does the applicant have a strong proof of concept with at least 1-2 years of impact towards ending extreme poverty?
- Disruption: Has the applicant created measurable impact in an innovative manner that disrupts the systems that allow for extreme poverty to exist?
- Scalability: How would this award enable/support the applicant to scale or improve their work?
- Adapatibility: Can the applicant demonstrate examples of their ability to adapt and evolve to changing conditions?
- The grand prize Waislitz Global Citizen Award will be awarded to an applicant based on the 5 criteria listed above.
- The Waislitz Global Citizen Disruptor Award will be awarded to an individual who excels in the “Disruption” criteria.
- The Waislitz Global Citizens’ Choice Award will be selected with input from public online voting by the Global Citizen community.
- The Waislitz Global Citizen COVID-19 Response Award will be awarded to an applicant who excels in the “Adaptability” criteria and has implemented a specific adaptation, pivot or new program that addresses the impacts of COVID-19.
