The OIF, Radio France internationale (RFI) and Reporters sans Frontières (RSF) are jointly launching the call for applications for the sixth edition of the “Francophone Prize for Media Innovation”, which aims to encourage a rapidly evolving sector and to strengthen press freedom and the right to information in the French language.
This call is addressed to all media (radio, television, written press and new media) of the 88 member states and governments of La Francophonie who have been able to develop innovative offers that take into account new modes of consumption and access to ‘information.
Aims
The “Francophone Prize for Media Innovation” aims to support and encourage several types innovation:
- Editorial innovation:
- This covers innovative initiatives on content, depending on local contexts, in the way in which information is selected, prioritized (subjects covered), language (chosen angles, tone) and / or presented (graphics / design, formats, data journalism, information enrichment), possibly through a project definite editorial which would aim to bring a new reading of information. The desire to reach certain specific audiences (especially young people) through content can also be seen as an editorial innovation.
- Innovation in uses:
- This covers innovative initiatives from the point of view of “users” allowing, overall, to promote accessibility to information content on all media, taking into account local sociological realities, as well as the interactivity of audiences with the media on the information disseminated, depending on the media mobilized.
- Innovation in the economic models of the media and their modes of organization:
- This covers innovative initiatives in the way in which the media ensures so much of its financing and its profitability (collaborative financing, innovative advertising, paid access innovative), than in the development of its content (eg: participatory or contributory models)
Funding Information
The winners, appointed by a jury made up of representatives of the OIF, RFI and RSF as well as other personalities from the French-speaking media world, will receive an endowment of 15,000 euros (1st Prize), 10,000 euros (2nd Prize ) and 5,000 euros (3rd Prize). The prize will be awarded next November.
Eligibility Criteria
The candidate must be a legal person duly registered in accordance with the provisions regulations of the country where it is established.
Selection Criteria
The jury assesses the capacity or the willingness of a medium to:
- Develop an innovative editorial project both in terms of format, media and topics covered;
- Provide innovative information coverage, in order to reach audiences in particular younger, in the service of better access to knowledge of current issues;
- Respond to new media uses taking into account interactivity and user mobility and the growing use of social networks;
- Build synergies between professions and skills related to new technologies of information and communication ( webmaster, web designers, graphic designers, journalists, data journalists) at the service of better information for the public;
- Establish innovative and viable partnerships both from an economic point of view (financing participatory or specific and / or alternative advertising agencies, shareholdings of the cooperative) and technological (incubators, companies, universities);
- Build an innovative economic model that meets the needs and constraints of media users;
- Establish an original model of content development as an innovative mode, organization (e.g. contributory media) for the benefit of the quality of public information but also of its participation in the media;
- Use free software and / or open code software in the case of an activity mostly digital.
