The Wolfson Foundation is offering funding to museums and galleries to help improve the display and interpretation of collections that are of national significance. The goal is to enhance public access and engagement with these collections.
Funding is usually awarded for the refurbishment or creation of new galleries, and occasionally for education and learning spaces. Projects must aim to deliver excellent interpretation of permanent collections, improve public understanding, increase visitor numbers, support long-term sustainability, or contribute to the conservation of architectural heritage.
Grants start at a minimum of £15,000, with most awards ranging between £50,000 and £500,000. To be eligible, the museum or gallery must be operated by a registered charity or local authority, be fully accredited under the Museum Accreditation Scheme, and hold a collection of national significance.
Collections are typically expected to have formal recognition, such as Designated Outstanding Collections by Arts Council England or Recognised Collections by Museums Galleries Scotland. If the collection is not officially recognised, applicants must clearly demonstrate its national significance.
Certain costs are not eligible for funding. These include the purchase of land or existing buildings, grants to individuals or through intermediaries, ongoing maintenance, VAT, general appeals, events, and staff salaries.
