The British Council has announced the second round of the Crafting Futures Grant Scheme in collaboration with the Crafts Council – an initiative within Crafting Futures programme.
Aims
The aim of the grant scheme is to:
- Generate accessible research which makes a ‘case for craft’ and its potential to address economic, social, environmental and cultural challenges;
- Provide an opportunity to individuals, organisations and countries to get involved and contribute to the generation of new research and ideas, enabling a greater diversity of voices within the programme; and
- Strengthen the network of global practitioners and organisations in order to create a community of practice for shared learning and exchange in craft.
Funding Information
- The British Council will award research grants of up to £5,000 each for UK – based practitioners to undertake overseas projects, collaborations or other activities which explore ideas or research questions seeking to support the future of craft.
- Collaborating with local communities or practitioners the projects need to take place between November 2019 and April 2020
Research Questions
Through this grant scheme, British Council wants to build case studies which address the challenges and opportunities within craft globally and demonstrate the potential of the practice for a sustainable and inclusive future. Proposals should start with a research question which proposes a solution to a challenge in the craft sector and addresses this through project activity and collaboration.
They are particularly interested in proposals which address:
- Craft education and learning through making
- Economic empowerment and entrepreneurship
- Digital technology and craft
- Sustainability, climate change and biodiversity
- Culture-based design
- Inclusion of marginalised, indigenous or female communities through craft
- Futures for endangered craft
Proposals can take any form. Example activities include:
- New technical approaches to make craft processes more efficient, productive, sustainable or relevant, i.e. new systems or tools.
- New applications for traditional practice
- The application or development of new or experimental materials
- Collaborative projects with craft communities or designers generating new ideas together
- Innovative mapping or documentation projects
- Education projects connecting youth groups with craft communities
- Participatory workshop programmes exploring challenges within craft
- A new tool or system to create new networks for crafts communities
Eligibility Criteria
The basic eligibility criteria for applicants is:
- Applicant is UK-based (UK-based is defined as being resident in the UK, including having a UK address and bank account);
- Meaningful partnership with a local collaborator/host demonstrated by a letter of endorsement; and
- A proposal which puts forward a project that investigates a research question and presents an accessible output to share the knowledge and experience applicants gain.
